26.04.09 vs Bees Knees (A) League Won 5-1
FT: 5-1 (Gurney, Matt, Sim, Mitch x2)
HT: 3-1
Team news - with Ben, Easton, Herbie injured and Kingy, Pez unavailable we were missing a few regulars. However, it gave an opportunity to one or two who have not played as regularly as they would like with Scouse returning in goal, Matt in at centre half , Alex back to wing back with Wag in midfield., Sim returned up front alongside Gurns with Mitch, Dave and I on the bench.
Ratings:
Scouse: 9 - had an excellent game not because he was that busy but because what he had to do he did with calm assurance. His handling from crosses was very good and he dominated his area with his distribution very good too. This was more like the Scouse we all know and even made an excellent save near the end when left 1 on 1.
Alex: 9 - superb throughout and defended very well but was a real threat going forward. Could have had a couple of goals but his attacking and crossing down the right were excellent with some crucial challenges thrown in too.
Woody: 8.5 - had a very good game especially in the first half when he was marking a very good winger. He did well to keep pace with him and still had time to get forward and give us an outlet on the left.
Pad: 8.5 - much better and 2nd half especially was more like his old self. Won every header he called for second half and marshalled the defence very well and when he is as committed as he was 2nd half he is quite a big intimidating obstacle (not quite so big next year please
).
Harry: 8.5 - another that picked his game up from Wed and played with his usual determination. He and Matt looked a good pair together with plenty of determination, pace and also played the ball out well at times. Good show Harry.
Matt: 8.5 - frustrated at lack of games. However, when 100% fit he is a very good player and showed that today. He was commanding in the air and quick over the ground in a position that I believe I said to him pre-season he could make his own (injuries have blighted that). Got up well at a corner to score an excellent goal - if this is his last game then a great way to go out (hopefully not his last - see end of season report to follow Matt!!).
Haggs: 9 - dominant in the air and despite a few first half roly polys he had a very good game (I am sure I fell in the crater that you made Haggs
). Got the ball down played it easy and got forward well. Showed his usual commitment and was class throughout.
Elksy: 9 - quality in possession and also worked extremely hard off the ball. Part of a midfield that dominated the game and kept the ball moving with simple passing. He and Haggs did a good job of working the ball into Wags feet to keep us on the front foot for the majority of the game.
Wag: 9 - played in midfield and his passing was very good with him hardly giving the ball away all game. Mixed his passing up short and long whilst choosing the right option throughout the game. Linked the midfield very well and got better as the game went on. Well played Wag!
Sim: 8 - scored a good goal with a lovely finish into the bottom right hand corner after good work down the right by Alex. Had a couple of other chances and kept the defenders on the toes with his pace.
Gurney: 8.5 - more like himself today and led the line very well. If anything it was a bit too easy and he did not get out of second gear. Took his goal well with a poachers finish and linked up well with the midfield whilst stretched the defence with his movement and strength.
Subs:
Mitch : 8 - came on with 35 to go and was very effective. More like the Mitch we saw when he first joined and took his two goals very well. Linked up well with Dave and looked threatening whilst his first made the game safe with a very good finish from 30 yards.
Dave: 8 - led the line and got the ball down whilst also showing his experience with 2 or 3 excellent passes. Unlucky not to score with a great volley over his shoulder which would have finished the season nicely.
Me: - well I came on for a cameo at the end and well it was a comedy cameo. Tried to shoulder charge the biggest player on their side and was sent sprawling only for Al to find my feet with a pass and fall into a big heap again (convinced it was the same area that Haggs fell in the 1st half). Still enjoyed the run around and may make a comeback in the 5 aside next week
Well another season comes to an end and I will post my thoughts on the season in Managers Comments so have a read!!
Today was an important game not just because we could still finish second but because we owed it to ourselves to see it through as the last 3 weeks have extremely tough.
We started well and Gurns finished nicely to set us on our way before a break was allowed to go on (despite being 3 yards offside but hey "cest la vie") and they equalised. They were looking threatening for 10 minutes until Matt got up very well at corner to power home a header and we never looked back.
Sim drove in from the edge of the box and it was 3-1 at half time.
In the second half Mitch and Dave joined the action and we scored two more goals with an excellent finish from Mitch and a nice tap in to put a more realistic finish on the scoreline.
We showed in spells today that we can play and despite 5 or 6 players being absent we showed that we have quality throughout the squad with a good performance. Despite what others may say Boyz we have some bloody good footballers and on a poor surface you played some good stuff and thoroughly deserved the 3 points.
Well we knew the title was deservedly won by Throops but a fine result by West End beating Kirby means that we have finished as Runners Up.
VERY VERY PROUD OF YOU ALL - You have all been fantastic throughout the season and runners up is the least we deserve especially if you look at where we were in the table at the end of September !!
Enjoy the summer and be ready for a tough pre-season as WE ARE GOING UP!!
I will update Managers Comments to give my thoughts on the season over the next 24 hours so have a read and post your thoughts.
22.4.09 vs West End (A) League Lost 3-1
FT: 3-1 (Ben)
HT: 1-1
Team News - One change from Sun with Scouse unwell Kiff stepped into the breach at the last minute with Dave and Mitch returning to the bench with Matt and Sim.
Ratings:
Not going to analyse all of you individually as it was not one to remember.
The game itself was not the easiest and certainly was not helped by the league's lack of organisation as to have 3 officials in one top of the table fixture (deservedly i may add) whilst the second game has none is to say the least frustrating.
We conceded early from a corner when we just did not defend but for the rest of the half battered them although we never looked good defensively and but for their keeper probably would have 2 or 3 up. We did equalise with a well worked corner from Wag headed in by Ben to draw us level.
Half Time and we spoke about commitment and hard work and although everyone was giving 100% we were off the pace and looked a bit leggy or tired.
Unfortunately with 15 minutes to go we conceded another poor goal from a corner and were left chasing an equaliser which never came and we were caught on the break to concede a third.
Special mention to Haggs, Elksy and Kiff who throughout showed a real determination and were probably the only ones who played as they know they can.
I am not going to rant as I know you were all hurting as much as me not because we could not win the league (Full Credit to Throops - a fantastic club with a great set of lads who deserve the title) but because we probably for only the 2nd or 3rd time all season fell short of the standards we set.
These things happen and we can either go into Sunday and roll over or get back up stick our chests out and show Mr Meode that we are better than he thinks.
I know what a great bunch you are and if we relax, get a smile back on our face and go out with the spirit we have showed all season we can finish on a high - let's ensure we do that so we can enjoy the last game of the season before the annual 5 a side. Results will take care of themselves and whether we finish 2nd or 3rd it has still been a fantastic season which everyone has played a huge part in.
Well done Boyz - 3 points Sunday!!
19.4.09 vs Western (A) League Won 5-2 - played at Guthlaxton
FT: 5-2 (Gurney 2, Haggs, Elksy 2
)
FT: 3-1
Team news - one change from Wednesday with Kingy on his hols so Elksy returned with Alex slotting in at centre half with Elksy in Midfield. Sim and Matt were joined on the bench by the last resort - me!
Ratings:
Scouse: 7 - not the busiest game and tidied up a couple of long balls. Communication broke down with Pad on a couple of occasions and was lobbed after the offside trap was sprung. Decent performance with nothing flash to do.
Wag: 7 - steady and had another game where he had to contain as they played a wide man deep down our right. Still however had time to put a few decent passes into midfield and got forward well although he got into one or two great positions only to not quite deliver the cross to go with it.
Woody: 7.5 - workman like but had a better game with him getting stronger as the game went on. Got forward well and put one or two great crosses in especially first half on the run with a lively surface not aiding first time delivery.
Harry: 8 - quietly very effective and due to the opposition leaving one man up top Harry took responsibility to move forward with his man and broke up the game well in Midfield and at times got forward with a couple of very good runs. Love his attitude and showed from the start that he wanted it and never waivered all game.
Alex: 8 - hates playing centre half but man marked their striker who barely had a kick - other than the 2nd goal
. Still showed his pace to clear up at times but also got in front of his man to give us a decent platform from the back. Al has showed his commitment for the team in recent games and should be commended - never moans or gets the hump and has been asked to play a variety of roles for the team which he has done extremely well.
Pad: 7 - mixed if I am honest and he knows I am his harshest critic but never quite felt he was on his game. I think he was as committed as ever but in the last couple of games has hid a wee bit by not bossing the back line and making others do there job - needed to push us up and then sit off but made a few unusual decisions today with a couple of poor clearances. Will have better days but still competed and gave 100%.
Elksy: 8 - got on the ball and when given time he found feet consistently. Took his goals well (okay the first may have touched the defender from the corner
!!) but his second was a good strike. In the two games to go needs to impose himself a little more but did well in a midfield battle which we dominated.
Ben: 8.5 (Mom) - showed his quality throughout and linked the game very well with their midfield never getting to grips with him and his movement off the ball was very good. Unlucky not to score but got himself into some very good positions and had an excellent game - need more of the same on Wed!
Haggs: 8.5 - ran Ben very close and once he got his head up after the first 15 mins of the 2nd half he continued to dominate in a very physical battle with Gilly who was their big threat. Haggs probably felt a bit harshly treated at half time but I expect a lot from him as he makes us tick when on his game and showed it at times with his commitment and passing. Chin Up Big Man (Both of Em
) - I need you up for the last two games!!
Gurns: 8 - led the line very well and for 70 minutes kept their defence on the back foot both in the air but also with his movement and leading the line. Took his two goals with his usual confidence and he needs to have a sleep in the afternoon Wed so we see the best of him versus West End.
Easton: 7.5 - worked hard and closed down but has times in the game when he goes too quiet. He looked dnagerous at times and with a bit of luck could have had a couple of goals.
Subs:
Sim: 6.5 - looked a bit fed up today and not quite at it as he usually is. Frustrated at not playing but needs to turn the anger or frustration into a performance - need you to stick your fingers up at me Sim and show me you deserve your place (like Haggs did!!!).
Matt: - good to see him back and fit. Came on in his favoured position at RWB
but did alright in getting stuck in and had chance to put in a couple of good crosses.
Me: - needed a pair of fresh legs at the back and came on to keep it tight at the back. Enjoyed my cameo role and may yet play a part before the end of the season (Be warned Pad!!).
Well the games have taken their toll a wee bit with Herbs, Mitch injured and Ash, Pez and Kingy unavailable we went into the game a bit short hence the cameo role!
We started pretty well although IMO I thought we were bit off it and the pace was not quite as good as usual. However, we scored first from Elksy's corner and i thought we would relax and go on to win convincingly but we defended poorly to not clear our lines which resulted in a soft penalty conceded.
However, we did not panic and showed our quality with good finishes by Gurns and Elksy putting us comfortably 3-1 up at the break.
Second half, we were slow out of the blocks with one or two not really at it and still licking their wounds from my half time chat. We then conceded a very poor second goal when we unneccessarily played offside which left them clean through to chip Scouse and it was game on.
However, we then got back into our stride with Haggs and Elksy getting a grip on the middle of the park with Haggs fouled for a penalty which was calmly slotted home by Gurns. Up stepped Haggs in the middle of the park to drive an unstoppable 20 yarder into the bottom right hand corner to make it 5-2 and the game was won.
We then went through the motions a bit last 25 minutes although we did look a little tired which meant we could give Sim and Matt a run.
Even time for Pad to have a rest with a bit of leadership and youth required at the back -
Just a few points as I want to see the right attitude from the off on Wednesday - we all need to be really up for it as the results have taken a slight twist and we may yet have very interesting finish to the season. However, it will count for nothing if we do not do our jobs on Wednesday which means alll being up for it (even if you are sub!!!) and do the jobs you are asked to do for the team. I have asked one or two to play positions that you may not choose as your first choice but it is about the TEAM - need 100% commitment and effort with support for each other.
Today was a job well done with some very good stuff played at times so we go into the final two games with lots to play for.
West End are one of the best sides in this division and will feel they owe us so we need to be right up for it - in their faces and ready to fight for the points on Wednesday in a must win game. We focus on this game and I have a slight dilemma as we have not looked as sharp in midweek so I have a choice to stick with what we have been playing or freshen up with a couple of younger or fresher legs as we need to match them physically on Wednesday.
Apologies if you feel I have a but harsh but I felt at times we went through the motions a wee bit but also that a few experienced players will reflect and know they could of done a tad more but hey we won - we move on and we need to be bang at it Wed night.
If you are reading this then post your thoughts - do not sit silently (post anonymously if you disagree) - I have broad shoulders make your comments and please note the social events too (a lot of effort and cash goes into the end of season awards/presentation !!).
15.4.09 vs AFC Beaumont (A) League Won 2-1
FT: 2-1 (Haggs, Dave "The Saviour Ash")
HT: 1-1
Team news - no changes from the starting 11 with Elksy joining Sim, Matt, Mitch and Dave on the bench.
Ratings:
Scouse: 7 - okay, not quite as vocal as I would have liked and looked a tad nervous at 1 all. Came for a couple of crosses and did not dominate but kept his head up and cleared his lines well in the second half.
Wag: 6 - not his type of surface as the slow, long grass stopped him getting the ball to feet with anytime to pick his passes. Put in a couple of decent crosses but not a game that he enjoyed and similarly got frustrated as our build up play broke down.
Woody: 6 - another who tried hard but never got going and had his hands full marking the wide man. His passing was a bit off but kept going before being replaced by Stef.
Pad: 6 - frustrating tonight after being so dominant on Sunday. Felt like his was off the pace and let the team sit too deep to cover his own lack of edge. To his credit one of few voices but not necessarily as constructive as usual. Bit like the team generally very average.
Kingy: 6 - won his share of headers but was not as dominant as recent games and generally part of an untidy defensive display. Kept going till the end and got on the end of a few long throws.
Harry: 6 - not his tenacious competitive self tonight and cannot remember a game where he won so few tackles. Looked a bit short of pace tonight and maybe suffered with it being a midweek game.
Alex: 7 - one of the few to get any credit as he kept going won his share of tackles and generally gave us a set of young legs in midfield. Got forward in the first half but ended up slightly more defensive second half.
Haggerty: 7 - worked hard and looked more committed than most although I thought he overplayed at times and got caught in possession too often but the pitch and youthful opponents did not help. Got forward to score the first with a tidy finish.
Ben: 6 - worked hard tried to get on the ball but due to the generally crap pitch had little opportunity to get the ball down and use his dribbling skills. Did provide the few moments of quality and like everyone I think was frustrated with his own performance.
Gurney: 6 - not a good night and never got going and by his own account was not happy with his performance. Never stopped trying and left on till the end in the hope a chance might fall for him but was not to be.
Easton: 6 - started brightly but faded and not dissimilar to last week was not as good as the two previous sunday's. Similar to the general team did not work as hard as the standards he has set.
Subs:
Stef: 6.5 - at least looked up for it and provided a bit of a spark. Not helped by the general poor passing but at least showed a bit of leadership and made a case for a recall.
Sim: 6.5 - looked hungry and put in a lot of effort when he came on. Scored a good goal which was ruled out by the f***** cheating lino. Gave us an edge and provided some pace up top.
Ash: 8 (MOM) - when we needed a bit of luck, inspiration and some experience on came Dave to save the day. May have only touched the ball 3 or 4 times but used his experience to get his head on the long throw to give us the 3 points.
Mitch and Matt were not used but showed good character as it is about the team at this stage and not any one individual.
3 points and thoroughly deserved as only one team tried to win the game. However, let's not kid ourselves we never really got going and I think we had various reasons - we never got going, the pitch slowed the ball down which did not aid our passing, their young legs kept them going on a surface that aided there game plan.
BUT we know we fell off the standards we have set but we deserved the win as we created the only chances second half. We undoubtedly were denied a good goal by their cheating lino - not sure why you run a Sunday club if all you are going to do is cheat (never seen anything so blatant). As ed said he was the same when we played at home and justice was delivered with the winner being given by the ref despite the ball being 3 foot over the line (lino never saw that!!).
We cannot be great all of the time and the signs of a good side are to keep going and find a way to win which with good substitutions (
) we managed to pull off the win.
1 down and 3 cup finals left so we move on and we have a tought on Sunday when Western come to Narborough - plenty to think about before then with the performance tonight but the full value of the squad was borne out tonight and with Kingy playing his last game of the season it will be even more important over the final 3 games of the seasons.
Lets make sure we all have an early night Saturday and have the energy to put Western to the sword - Come on Boyz lets see this through!!
12.4.09 vs Throops (A) Legaue Won 4-3
FT: 4-3 (Pad, Easton, Gurney 2)
HT: 3-1
Team New - a couple of changes with Dave not 100% and Gurney full fit it meant that we started 3-5-2 with a familiar back 3 with Alex in midfield alongside the experience of Haggs and Ben. Gurney up top with Easton.
Ratings:
Scouse: 8 - had a decent game although not particularly tested and will wonder how he conceded 3 as that was more or less the only shots on target. Good to see him commanding his area and it was noticeable he was more vocal which helps the lads in front. Also held good starting positions on the edge of his box so was available to clear any balls over the top.
Wag: 8 - execeptional first half with 3 assists and plenty of quality possession with him using the ball to great effect. Got forward very well and put in numerous quality free-kicks which put the Throops back line under pressure. Second half was man-marked but did a very good defensive job.
Woody: 8 - almost the opposite to Wag in that first half he had to mark a wide man all half although when we had the ball he got forward to great effect. Second half had more space and got on the ball with plenty of good passes. Had another good game and stuck to his task well at the back.
Harry: 8 - returned after a toe injury and stuck to Summers all game. Had a good game in a very competitive match up against their danger man. Won a lot of the physical battles and made one or two crunching challenges and part of a good defensive effort in the quarter of the game.
Kingy: 8 - competed, won the ball and headed everything clear all half. Also got forward well at set pieces as we looked dangerous when ever the ball was in their box. Had a couple of moments second half but showed character to go up the other end and his long range effort set up the crucial 4th goal.
Pad: 9 (Mom) - leadership and experience at this stage in the season is vital and Pad showed it in buckets today. Well disciplined, committed and constantly organising the lads in front too. Got forward very well at set pieces and scored a good first goal and with a touch of luck may have had another.
Alex: 8.5 - the lad gets better with every game and is maturing into a fine player epitomised by his performance today. Gave us legs in midfield and won endless tackles or interceptions whilst he also got forward well at times. In the 2nd half showed real maturity to sit and pick up as Throops pushed more men forward.
Haggs: 8.5 - an excellent physical effort with his commitment matched by his quality and use of the ball. Showed discipline as well having been given a soft yellow card he controlled his game well to ensure he played the full 90 and we played with 11 men all game. Good show Haggs now maintain it in the run-in although without the hang over!!
Ben: 8 - linked the midfield with the attack and there were spells where he was causing havoc with his support to the front two. Got forward at every opportunity and put in the work especially in the last 20 minutes when we needed to dig in. Conceded a harsh penalty but otherwise had a good game.
Gurney: 8.5 - super show up top with him leading the line very well. Won his flick ons and held the ball up well all game and the centre halfs never really got to grips with him as his movement kept them on their toes. Took his two goals with his usual calmness especially his first which he made look simple after a great through by Wag set him up.
Easton: 8 - worked his socks off and came in for some harsh treatment as he was on the receiving end of 2 or 3 tough challenges. Closed down the bakc line all game and his energy in the first 30 minutes epitomised the way we went about them early on. Deserved his goal with a nice tap in from a good cross.
Subs:
Sim: 7 - came on and worked very hard to keep the spark up top. Got a bit of rough treatment but used the space very well and took the pressure off with a couple of great runs down the wing. Also good to see the work rate and commitment physically as he put himself about very well.
Ash: - came on for the last 15 minutes and did his job by picking up well in defence. Used his experience to help steady the back line with his physical presence and was very honest pre-game by admitting he was not 100% - Good character Dave!
Mitch: - came on for the final 10 minutes and another that showed the right spirit by running around and closing them down by keeping the defence on their toes.
Matt - not used. Good to see him back on the bench and ready for action. Similar to Herb showed the right spirit and encouragement from the side.
As the saying goes 7 days is a long while in football - we all know we let ourselves down a week ago but the reaction in the last week has been fantastic with two very good team efforts - key word being team!!
You have stuck together very well and today at times we played some very good stuff. Especially in the first 25 minutes again where we dominated a very good team and were unfortunate to only be two up. The movement and passing was very good with some very quick simple football with the easy ball being played throughout meant that we got off to a good start.
We then conceded a poor goal defensively although to be fair to Dean it was a fantastic acrobatic finish to bring them back into the game. However, we dug deep and went again with a deserved third goal by Gurney after a superb through ball by Wag.
Half Time and we were comfortable if not a tad unfortunate not to be further ahead. We started the second half well and looked in control until with their first real attack the referee gave a penalty against Ben for him being over physical with a bloke twice his size! - may have been a tad harsh but you win some of those and lose some.
We then lost a bit of composure and shape although as you would expect Throops committed a lot of players forward but we carried on competing and other than Scouse tipping one over they did not look to threatening. We proceeded to go up the other end and Kingy hit a long range effort which the keeper saved only for Gurney to follow up to give us a 4-2 lead. We still had time to make unnecessarily anxious as we conceded a poor goal from a corner but there were no more moments of concern.
Three vital points against the best team we have played in this division. Whether we finish top or 2nd we have shown that we are as good as anyone as no one has taken 4 points off Throops this season- they undoubtedly had 2 or 3 quality players missing but so did we and it is down to what we do on the day so we should take confidence from this, get the ball down and force our game on teams over the coming two weeks.
I said to you all on Wednesday that we had two choices let the season die or show some character after the debacle at Kirby. Well you have repsonded magnificently and showed that we have a great squad who will pull together and proved that we are a decent side. There are not many sides who would have the players missing we have had and have others come in and done great jobs - I know that Herbs especially is frustrated.
HOWEVER, I am pleased (delighted) BUT we have achieved nothing yet and have 4 more cup finals and we need to play them all the same way as we did today. I know we have one or two more away in the coming games so you need to stick together as a squad as I have no doubt we will face challenges in all the games left - we are not good enough to be complacent but with the strength of the bench I am sure no one will let their standards drop.
TWO Weeks left - let's leaving nothing in the tank Boyz starting against Beaumont on Wednesday. We drew 0-0 earlier in the season and did not do ourselves justice so I want everyone bang up for this all 16/17 of you as we have put the season back on track. Now lets push on and see it through - you never know what may happen as there may be a twist or two left!!
8.4.09 vs Talbot (H) League Won 5-0
FT: 5-0 (Haggs, East, Ben, Gurney 2 (1 Pen))
HT: 1-0
Team News - couple of knocks from Sunday with Herbs and Harry not fit to play. A couple of other changes with Gurns and Elksy on the bench with Dave, Sim, Pad and Ben returning to the starting 11.
Ratings:
Scouse: 8 - Good game and a marked improvement on Sunday. More confident, vocal and dominant with him making a couple of excellent saves but commanded his area and distributed the ball very well. Much more like Scouse - well played fella!
Wag: 8 - Had an excellent match with plenty of good crisp passing whilst worked his socks off down the right. Got forward well despite his opponent cheating and also delivered some excellent dead ball free-kicks and corners.
Woody: 8 - Skipper for the night and led by example. Good to see him getting stuck in and also got forward more than recent games with some excellent link play and distribution into the box.
Alex: 8 - Confident display with him never troubled by his opponent and looked sharp all game. Used his pace to great effect and broke up the majority of any breaks with good interceptions. Growing importance in the team with every game.
Kingy: 8.5 - Character!! That is what was required and he showed it in buckets. Never easy when you have had an off day and he reacted exactly as I expected - commanding, competitive and vocal with him growing through the game. Well done big man - same again on Sunday please!
Pad: 8 - Used his experience and lead the back line extremely well. Commanded the back line and organised those in front efficiently and got better as the game wore on. Needs to use his loaf and lead the lads around him which will definitely benefit the team overall.
Ash: 8 - Another who has been around the block a few times but added some steel and simplicity to the midfield. Won his physical duel and got forward well at times whilst always a threat from set pieces. Kept it simple by playing the easy ball and was part of a good display by the middle of the park - keep it positive Dave would be my only slight comment but a good display and warranted his recall with two assists.
Haggs: 8 - Sharp, committed and dominant in the air all game. looking like the Haggs of Jan/Feb who was dominating games in the middle of the park. Set us on our way with a good headed finish from a great Ash cross. Needs to keep up the work rate so that he is effective for a full 90 mins (if allowed
!!). Expect a big game on Sunday from the big man - will be a test to see if he is up to it!
Ben: 9 (MOM) - class, linked the game very well all game. Scored a good goal and does a lot of work that may go unnoticed but his pace and skill are well suited to the conditions at this time of the season with his return very timely. Well played Eds - keep it going fella!
Easton: 7 - not as effective as Sunday and although he took his goal well the work rate was not as good as Sunday. Looked a threat but I think will know he can play better - needs to put in the effort of Sunday every game! Nice finish but quieter than I anticipated.
Sim: 7 - another who did not force himself forward like I hoped as he looked a bit off the pace. Needs to be knocking the door down to get his place back in the starting 11 and produce performances like those versus Legion, Balloonatics etc to get his front berth back.
Subs:
Gurns: 7 - came on scored two and led the line with some good link up play in the last 15-20 minutes. Needs to be fired up to work the centre halfs sock off and it was all a bit too easy - will not be so on Sunday if he is selected so needs to be fired up from the start.
Mitch: 6 - great pace but has been quiet in last two performances than usual. Another that should be working his socks off to force his way into one of the two front spots and needs to put himself about a wee bit more when coming on.
Elksy: 6 - not 100% with his facial injury (Nice one Harry) but showed a few glimpses of quality and started on the bench due to his unavailability on Sunday but will undoubtedly be back on Wednesday and demanding a recall.
Unavailable: Herbs, Harry, Matt, Pez, Junior.
Generally Boyz I was delighted as it was a better performance than for a few weeks.
We got better as the game went on and once we got the ball down and started to play our game the quality we have began to show through and we probably should have scored double the amount that we did.
One or two need to esnure that they put the same effort in game in and game out as we have competition for places with us having real competition up front but no one making a claim to be shoe-ins week and week out. Whether young or old I want to see high levels of effort and work rate which will I am sure then lead to more goals as we do create chances regularly.
I would like to say well done to the lads at the back as they responded fantastically after Sunday with Scouse and Kingy showing real character. Good to see Wag, Woody, Dave and Haggs all playing more like they can and we showed some of the confidence and football we are capable of.
We need to be ready to fight and compete for everything on Sunday against the best team in the Division as they will undoubtedly be up for it and will have read this so they will know we will be up for it!
Stick your chests out Boyz, Believe in Each Other - Be 100% Committed and we can have a real go!! - Proud of the Character we showed yesterday as I believe Sunday was a one off and now firmly put to bed!
5.4.09 vs Kirby (A) League Lost 4-1
FT: 1-4 (Easton)
HT: 1-3
Tean New - near full strength squad except for the absence of Ben and injury to Matt. Opted for 3-4-3 with an experienced side selected in a big game. Strong bench with Pad, Dave, Sim, Mitch and Junior ready for action.
Ratings as follows:
Scouse: 5 - quiet, hesitant and let his chin hit the floor. Will know he should have caught the first from the corner and his nervousness with the back 3 made us look weak all game. In his defence he was not at fault for any of the other three goals and was let down by the lads in front of him.
Elksy: 5 - Not himself today. Quiet and not as confident or composed as usual. Was not as committed as normal and maybe the clash with Harry was more serious than I thought. Looked hesitant and may be his cheek affected his game.
Harry: 6 - the best of a poor defensive display. Stuck to his task and to be fair had the better of both if his opponents. Not as dominant as usual but partly due to a suspected broken toe he got in the first half. Battled manfully.
Kingy: 5 - He knows.
Wag: 6 - never really got on the ball and struggled to influence the game but was moved about a number of times by me to try and fill in to get us going. Stuck to whichever task he was given but not one of his outstanding games.
Herb: 6 - like me extremely frustrated and never stopped running but we never quite got to grips with the game to dominate. Not helped by us by-passing midfield with a lot of long balls and little composure from the back when playing the ball forward.
Haggs: 6 - steady. Certainly competed physically but never really got forward or dominated as he has in earlier games in the season. Would not fault his work rate but not one of his better games.
Alex: 7 - one of our better players on the day as when he played out right contained their wing back and always looked dangerous going forward. Due to our lack of composure was starved of quality balls to feet.
Woody: 6 - it is just not happening for Woody at the moment and he gave 100% but looked a bit rusty and off the pace. Never really got forward as much as I would have liked and looked a bit tentative in the tackle.
Gurney: 6 - started well but as we stopped passing it he struggled to get into the game. Not through lack of effort but certainly the service did not help and never had any opportunities in or around the box.
Easton: 8 - showed heart, courage and character. Never stopped running and closed down their defence all game. He looked dangerous and really showed he wanted it. Good effort but one of few who showed the necessary commitment, work rate or will to win.
Subs:
Sim: 6 - desperately disappointed not to start and I got it wrong on this show as he warrants a place in the starting 11. Tried hard when he came on but it was difficult to change the game.
Pad: 6.5 - at least showed a bit of character and another who was disappointed not to start. Came on, organised the defence and put in one or two challenges that at least vented a bit of frustration.
Mitch: 6- came on, closed down and put in effort although by the time he came on we looked beaten and never really got a chance to score.
Dave and Junior were not used whilst Dave showed good character by running the line.
Where do I start?
Did I under estimate them or Did I over estimate us?
Not sure but this is my take on it:
We were their equal for the vast majority of the game and would argue that first half we looked the better team yet came in 3-1 down. However, I picked a team full of experience banking on a number of experienced players to play well under the pressure of the game.
If I am being absolutely honest you let yourselves down and if you are anything like me will be left feeling absolutely frustrated. We conceded three first half goals that were all down to our errors which made it an uphill task - however, I believe as a team we did not play. We hardly put 3 or 4 passes together all game and rarely tested their keeper in the second half.
We have shown a great team spirit all season but today we had a lot of players looking at each other to take responsibility rather than grabbing the bull by the horns and doing it themselves.
We have performed excellently for the vast majority of the season and considering the first month have done extremely well to get in the promotion shake up.
We know have 6 cup finals left and need to win them all if we are to finish with a decent season.
It is know up to you whether we let the season fizzle out or you rally around one another including the lads who know they did not perform to help each other get over this and respond. It is easy to point fingers but we are a squad and a bloody good one I believe but we had a bad day today who did not hunt in packs and work as a team but we need to move on.
We can either feel sorry for ourselves or get back up and be counted - good news is we have a game very quickly on Wednesday to show a bit of character.
Time for showing we (all of us) have a few bollocks and be prepared to face up on Wednesday!!
22.03.09 vs Bowden (A) League Won 2-0
FT: 2-0 (Sim, Kingy)
HT: 1-0
Team News - same as last week except with Alex unavailable and Scouse delayed it meant a recall for Haggs at centre half with Pez in the sticks. Strong bench with Dave and Matt joined by Harry and Ben who were fit again.
Okay............here goes. This is not going to be pretty or easy but this will be restrained as I think some of my feelings are better left unstated.
I have decided not to rate performances as I am not into public criticism by individual - I would rather commend Pez for his keeping, Ben/Harry for attitude and appetite when they came on and ..................I am struggling for anymore positives if I am honest.
Another positive I suppose is that we won when playing abslolutely garbage .........not sure that is a positive as they are one of the worst sides I have seen.
One player mentioned that he felt that playing is a real hardship as we do not seem to be playing it easy...........well trust me it is bloody crap standing and watching at the moment as I do not think we have really performed in the last couple of months with the exception of Legion at home.
I pick the team so I will take some responsibility to start with and believe that I may have been trying to accommodate one or two who have not been playing as well as they can whilst I have always believed that if the team wins and you did your job that you earn the right to keep the shirt for the next week.
In recent games a number of individuals have not performed and because the collective have pulled us through I have been fair I believe in selecting the same players maybe just maybe that needs to change.
I think today a lot of players were waiting for others to make things happen whilst our work rate and commitment were very poor. They wanted it more and tried a lot harder than we did despite the gulf in ability it showed that team work does count. This may seem harsh and I know that pressure for places is intense but if you have the shirt you have to show desire, bravery and ability which today I do not think we showed. I could have taken any of the outfield players off today and to be fair to three that came off it never got any better - we have a squad of 18 players who all can play and some of you who are playing at a level where you should be leading by example - you know who you are and today was not good enough.
We (all of us) need to have a look at ourselves and ask did we do everything we could to make things happen and put things right when we were not really under any pressure all game - the answer is "NO". This may seem a bit harsh Boyz as generally I can not fault the commitment or effort but we think we can achieve things and we need to up our game otherwise we could be in for a few shocks.
I would also remind the 13 or 14 that have played regularly that we have 2 or 3 who have not had games who are itching to play and prove a point.
This week will be interesting to see who attends training and I have plenty to think about in terms who will start next week - believe me it will be a very different team than todays!
15.03.09 vs Blackbird (H) League Won 5-1
FT: 5-1 (Sim, Mitch, Gurney 3)
HT: 2-0
A few changes from the game versus Throops with Pad, Ben, Harry all unavailable due to injury or illness. Haggerty still not 100% so on the bench. 3-5-2 with Elksy sweeping behind Alex and Kingy. Sim in a new position of RWB with Easton returning in midfield whilst Mitch made his full debut with his first start up top alongside Gurns.
Ratings:
Scouse: 8 - he had an excellent game. Made a couple of crucial stops at important stages of the game and although not particularly busy he concentrated all game and was strong/brave when required plus was more decisive than last week to put in a good display.
Sim: 8.5 - had a superb game at RWB with him a constant threat going forward and scored the crucial first goal with an excellent lobbed finish when braking from the middle of the pitch. Was a handful all game and there left winger could not cope with his exhilirating pace and movement. Got forward well to cross the ball into dangerous areas whilst never getting caught at the back and defended very well.
Woody: 7 - quiet game from Woody and took a bad knock which restricted his movement with a dead leg. Stuck to his task manfully but was not as competitive as usual but did good job in the first half especially to keep their wideman quiet.
Elksy: 8 - had a decent game and always looked composed on the ball. At times is a bit critical of himself and others in front when he needs to be slightly more constructive or positive. Was commanding all game and although frustrated at sweeping was part of a very good defensive performance against a lively attack.
Kingy: 8 - missed a couple of games but slotted very well back in at the back and good to have his leadership and voice at the back. Dominated aerially and also kept it simple all game whilst he made a number of crunching challenges. Good to have him back in the fold and will take some shifting now he has his place back!
Alex: 9 (MOM) - hates playing centre half but was outstanding at the back with his pace invaluable against the levely Blackbird strikeforce. Stood up physically very well and made countless challenges or interceptions to put us on the attack. Got forward on a couple of occasions with barnstorming runs forward whilst in the last 15-20 minutes got back to make 2 or 3 fantastic last ditch challenges.
Wag: 8 - dogged and competitive whilst hardly wasted the ball. Kept it simple moved it left and right with his passing to feet linking the midfield very well. Showed his versatility by moving to right and left wing back but was instrumental in midfield and set up a number of the goals we scored.
Herbs: 8 - skipper was more like his usual self with an energetic and competitive performance. Won his usual amount of challenges and was a lot more mobile with a number of very good runs forward whilst was more physical than last week with him right in their faces all game. Needs to maintain this with some big games ahead as he sets the tone in the middle of the park with his energy (Not bad for an old un!).
Easton: 8 - got a start after missing out last week and put in a very good shift with a high energy, pacy performance. Played at the front of a 3 in midfield but showed good work rate by coming forwards and backwards. Found space and used his pace to get forward into some dangerous positions and was always a threat to their defence.
Mitch: 8 - very good first start and kept up his impressive goalscoring record with an excellent finish to score the second. Like Sim he has frightening pace and stretched their defence all game whilst despite not being that well built he gave as good as he got physically. Will improve with every game and should learn a lot from the wily fox alongside him up top. Good debut and will be play a big part next season.
Gurney: 8.5 - narrowly shaded by Alex but led the line very impressively and deserved his goals which he has been due. Showed a bit more selfishness (good to see) by taking the chance to shoot when he got into goal scoring positions. Scored the crucial third and completed his trick with a lovely finish when one on one near the end.
Subs:
Ash: 7 - came on for Mitch and good to see him get a bit more time on the pitch under his belt. Used his experience to just keep it simple but also added a bit of physical presence in the midfield during the last 25 minutes.
Haggs: 7 - came on and looked fitter than last week and hopefully over his hamstring injury. Got his foot in and got the ball down and I am sure will be desperate for his place back - look forward to seeing him at training on Wed
Matt: - came on for the last 10 minutes to get a run and another that his nearing full fitness. Also ran the line extremely well as did Dave to be fair - please note Pez!
With 3 or 4 regulars missing what already looked a tough game did not look to appealing at 10am this morning. I would admit that I was bit unsure what to expect and although we had one or two out of position we put in a very good effort.
We maybe were not at our most fluent best but it is games like this that can make the difference at the end of the season - we outfought, outworked and outplayed them for the majority of the game and should have been out of sight by half time but we stuck at it to go on and win the game convincingly.
Boyz, today showed what I have said all season we have a very good squad and despite the absentees others stepped forward to make a claim for a starting spot.
Blackbird have some decent players but similar to the cup game when we play at pace and hunt in packs we are a match for anyone. Well done to Mitch on his first start and there will a lot more to come over the next few years whilst special mention to Kingy and Elksy who showed their experience at the back to talk Alex through the game with great effect.
May not have been as pretty as we all would have liked but it was a big 3 points and we now move on to get some momentum for the big games ahead.
08.03.09 vs Throops (H) League Drew 3-3
FT: 3-3 (Sim Hat Trick)
HT: 2-1
A couple of changes to take on the in form team in the Division. Pad, Woody returning with a 3-4-3 formation to start the game. Strong bench with Easton, Mitch, Haggerty, Dave, Matt and Pez all stripped and ready for action.
Match Ratings:
Scouse: 7 - bloody frustrating you are!! When you read this read it properly!! You can be outstanding at times and bloody hopeless at other points and it is all in your head. You must be 6 ft 1 and 13 stone - for god's sake use it! Made a few gashes today but we owe you for earning us a point near the end with a great save down to your right. Will be disappointed with the first and never looked relax - start punching your weight and you could be a fantastic keeper.
Alex: 7.5 - had a decent, quite and effective game. Had the better of his opponent for the majority of the game but we did not use the width particularly well in the second half and was starved of a quality ball. Still had a decent game.
Woody: 7 - looked a bit rusty in the first half but found his legs as the game went on. Got forward when he had the opportunity but did a good job defensively as he had a winger to mark and he rarely got around Woody.
Elksy: 7 - never quite as commanding as he can be and to be fair the lads in front looked stretched. Was never given much time to get it down and play but used his pace well to deal with a few difficult situations. Looked reasonable in the middle of the park and picked up their danger man well in the last 20 minutes.
Pad: 7 - looked rusty and a bit leggy. Disappointing as he looked sharp a fortnight ago against Legion. Kept going despite a back knock and despite not looking 100% fit never gave up. Moved to Sweeper but was a lot quieter than normal and not as dominant as usual.
Harry: 8 - switched men early on and picked up Summers very well. Stood up was committed and showed a great will to win. Rarely got caught for position or pace and did an excellent job - also put his head in where it hurts a number of occasions and showed great attitude.
Herbs: 7.5 - worked his socks off and put in a performance despite being 50:50 with his foot. Skipper showed his character as played when a lot would not have and still managed to get up and down the pitch. At times was slightly overran as we kept giving the ball away and it was tough test in the middle of the park especially second half.
Wag: 8 - had an excellent game and rarely gave the ball away. Sprayed a number of passes out wide especially in the first half and was instrumental in a couple of the goals. Second half took responsibility for Doughty and hardly gave him a kick. Moved to centre half and did a good job late on.
Ben: 7.5 - started on the left but moved into the centre of midfield before finishing at right wing back. In a very competitive midfield still had a few quality touches and when he was found to feet looked a danger. Set up Sim for the first with a simple pass and looked lively all game.
Gurney: 8 - led the line well with a good display especially in the first half when held the ball up and linked the midfield in well. Again as the quality dropped second half he was a little starved but worked off the scraps still to look a threat. Maybe needs to be a bit greedier as at times passed when he could go on his own.
Sim: 8.5 (Mom) - not necessarily his best performance of the season and probably never quite had the opportunities to run at them like he can. However, he took his goals very well and his 3 finishes were clinical and it was clear they were scared to death of him. Sent a sub on at half time with the specific task of getting at him and from the side could be heard that they intended to stop however they could but kept going well.
Subs:
Haggs: 6 - heart ruled his head and came on for the last 30 minutes but was clearly not 70% fit and my fault for risking him (I am not listening to you next time Big Man!!). Still put himself about considering his injury but will probably be out for a couple of weeks now
Easton: 6.5 - tried hard when he came on and got stuck in which is not his usual game. Looked lively and despite being disappointed not to start he never moaned and tried to prove a point with his performance.
Mitch: 6.5 - came on for Sim and looked quick. Just needs more experience in when to pass and when to dribble but certainly gave us a threat and will become over time an excellent player. Tried hard and will only get better over the coming games.
Matt, Dave and Pez were not used but never complained and will have roles to play over the run in. Dave's advice was certainly appreciated on the side.
Good to see an excellent turnout on the side with a good gathering of friends and family!!
How can I describe our performance?
Frustrating, patchy and at times good but I am sure they will be more happy than we are with a point. 1 up and 3-1 up we should have had enough experience and no how to close the game out but we never looked comfortable. In the end Throops deserved their point and although it would have been harsh they could have won it near the end when Leon cut inside and Scouse made a good save down to his right.
At times we looked good but it was no coincedence that it was when Wag got on the ball and played the ball wide to Al or Ben who both had the beating of their full backs.
There was no doubting the commitment of the appetitie as were clearly up for it and during the first half looked the hungrier. We deserved to lead at half time and when Sim completed his Trick with another good finish we should have pushed on to win the game but to be honest they got stronger and there midfield got control whilst we looked a bit off it at the back. We looked a bit leggy and maybe one or two who had not played over the past 2-3 weeks tired a bit.
Was pretty stressful on the side today trying to react and and it may have been the conditions but our passing was not as good as normal which is disappointing.
Well we will take the point and it will come down to the last 9 games - and whether it be Kirby, Throops, Western we still have some tough games ahead. Everyone is beating each other so a draw may not be a disaster - we need to focus on our job and ensure we are at it every week with 9 cup finals ahead which will start next week with a tough game against Blackbird.
Apologies if this is a bit down on you Boyz but I am just a tad disappointed but by Wednesday I will be back up again and getting my head ready for next Sunday when we need to get stuck in to Blackbird - selection headaches again with Kingy back too!!
01.03.09 vs Advance Couriers (H) Billy Walton Cup Lost 4-1
FT: 1-4 (Ben)
HT: 0-1
A couple of enforced changes from last weeks victory over Legion.
With Pad, Woody, Kingy and Haggerty unavailable it was a stretched squad to face the best side in the Alliance league. Dave Ash and Herbs returning getting the nod to gain some valuable time on the pitch.
Match Ratings:
Scouse: 6 - made a couple of good stops but generally was not at his best.
Elksy: 6.5 - not as dominant as last week and got himself worked up at times when composure was required. Still looked competent in their company but will have better games.
Harry: 7 - did a reasonable job against a very good opponent who hardly had too many sightings of the goal.
Ash: 6 - tough game to come back into and did reasonably well. Still showed glimpses of his quality on the ball but found the pace a stretch.
Alex: 8 (MOM) - marked his opponent out of the game and still was a threat going forward with an excellent display.
Wag: 7 - quietly effective and not overawed at all in the middle of the park. Quality in possession but also worked hard.
Herb: 7 - not quite 100% but as brave as ever and worked extremely hard. Will benefit from the 70 minutes with important games ahead.
Ben: 7.5 - out of position on the left but did a decent job and competed all game. Got forward well and took his goal well.
Gurney: 7 - put himself about well and when the ball was at his feet held it up well. Had a tough time against two big centre halfs.
Sim: 6.5 - tough game and hard work. Never gave up running but struggled to find time to get forward and at their defence.
Easton: 6.5 - not at his best but gave 100% and worked hard throughout.
Subs:
Mitch for Easton: Came on and tried hard but did not have much time to exploit his pace. Got up well to set up Ben's goal.
Pez for Herb: Got stuck in and used his experience as we got a bit stretched in the last 15 minutes.
Overall Boyz I could not knock the commitment and effort as we gave 100% but I do think we lacked a bit of belief and one or two either froze or got a bit overawed - not sure which but you decide.
Undoubtedly the Couriers are a quality side as their position suggests but IF we work our way up the leagues we will face teams of this standard more regularly - too much respect was shown and too many individual errors cost us goals at crucial times.
We were a match for them for long periods and I think they showed their confidence whereas surprisingly a few of you were not quite at it.
Anyway, we move on and we have done well to get so far in the BW Cup but it is the league games we can concentrate on now.
Interesting that we are attracting the attention of Throops and they are visiting this site and I understand that they are extremely confident leading up to next weeks game. They have been extremely consistent and deservedly lead the Division - we have a lot to do to get back into the title race as points in the bank are better than games in hand.
Hopefully we will have 3 or 4 lads returning for next week although I think 1 or 2 will still be missing so team selection will be interesting. Do we play 3-4-3, 3-5-2 or may be play a formation to couteract their main men?? - maybe we will also play on the small pitch - all dilemma's that need resolving for next week.
Training on Wednesday Boyz so let's see the 16 or 17 at least we have been getting and push your claim for a place next week!
22.02.09 vs Legion (H) Billy Walton Cup Won 1-0
A few changes from the last game which seemed like an age ago.
3-4-3 with Elksy sweeping behind Pad and Harry. Alex and Ben taking up the wide midfield berths with Waggy and Haggs in the middle of the park. Up top we had Sim, Easton and Gurns. Nice strong bench with Mitch, Dave, Woody, Matt, Pez and Kingy whilst Herbs was still out with a knock. Good to see Clive down and walking after his cruciate operation and pencilled in to return in 2009/10 season!
Match Ratings:
Scouse: 8 - A surprisingly quiet game and concentrated very well with a couple of good clearances under pressure whilst his only real test with a one on one was saved with his feet. Would have been a 9 but for not dominating his area near the end of the game and had Harry to thank for a goal line clearance
Elksy: 8.5 - Excellent performance and looked over his recent injury. Organised the lads at the back, kept it simple but used his skill in the right areas and looked composed at all times. Gave us excellent quality from the back with his distruibution and will be glad to have got a full 90 under his belt.
Harry: 8 - handled a livewire front line with his normal tenacity. I could tell he was well up for it before the game and had even done a bit of research on the opponents! - Had his usual committed performance and formed a very solid defensive partnership with Pad and on numerous occasions put his head in where the boots were flying around.
Pad: 8.5 - dare I say it probably as well as he has played all season. Tenacious, decisive and looked pretty sharp whilst never allowed his opponent to get the wrong side and made a number of excellent challenges but also his passing was better. The extra sharpness paying off with him even having time to show his twinkle feet in the second half
- alright I exaggerate but he did not hoof as much as normal!!!
Alex: 8.5 - unfamiliar left midfield but murdered them in the first half and made a very good winger spend most of the game defending. Got forward on plenty of occasions whilst defended at all times excellently. Building his form and confidence back up nicely for the big games ahead.
Ben: 8 - right midfield in a 4 and got up and down similarly to Alex with him containing his opponent but got forward extremely well. Moved into his more familiar attacking midfield role in the last 30 minutes and got forward and was a tad unlucky not score with a good header.
Wag: 8 - confidence had been a bit low and had not played as much as he would have liked but played very well in Midfield with him and Haggs dominating the game for the majority of the first half. Took great responsibility in the last 30 minutes to pick up McClafferty and he rarely had a kick which was testimony to the role that Wag played.
Haggs: 9 (Mom) - outstanding in the first half and took his role very responsibly whilst linked up well withWag. Made time for himself and kept it simple whilst rarely wasting a pass but also put in the work with him covering the ground very well. Dominated the middle of the park and sprayed a lot of good balls wide but good to see him leading by example. Still needs to keep coming training so he does not get tired in the last 15 mins!
Easton: 8 - started as the right sided attacker and worked hard in the first half whilst linking up well with Ben down the right. Used his pace and helped close their defence down on numerous occasions whilst also supported Gurney well to give us an option on the right. Clearly determined to win his place in the 11 on a rgeular basis and showed good commitment - needs to keep going and tired slightly in the second half.
Gurney: 8.5 - led the front line very well and never gave their centre halfs an easy time. So mich so that they took their centre half off at half time as he had been led a merry dance and resorted to kicking Gurns as he could not cope. Although he did not get as many chances as usual he played others in and linked up very well with the wide boys and the midfield.
Sim: 8.5 - excellent show for 75 minutes and up there with his best performance of the season. Worked his socks off closing down and on a number of occasions got back to win the ball - he looked at his frightening fastest and caused their defence huge problems when he ran at them.Scored a great winner from 20 yards after turning runnig at them and then hitting it into the bottom right hand corner. If you read this Sim well done fella - that's more like it. My only word of advice is be a tad more greedy mate and the goals will flow.
Subs:
Mitch: 7.5 - looked very lively when he came on and needs to keep pushing the lads in the starting eleven and his chance will come. Worked very hard down the right but looked even better when up top and his pace again caused their defence problems. What a nightmare for a ny defence Sim off and Mitch on! Imagine them attacking together - food for thought !! Keep up the effort Mitch.
Woody: 7 - came on and as dependable as ever. Left out due to his unavailability (Thank Kingy
) next week and although disappointed (first game not started in 2 years) he showed great attitude and will be determined to get his place back for Throops in a fortnight.
Dave, Matt, Kingy, Pez were not used although it was noted that Pez did a reasonable job running the line for a change!!
3 Weeks since the last game and a cup game against a Division 1 side who were in excellent form. I was not sure what to expect but I fancied we were looking sharp as training on Wednesday was very good with all 17 players (okay 16 and Me) looking pretty sharp which is unusual as after a break we can sometimes be a bit sluggish.
Probably the best we have played on the main pitch at home this season and a game we dominated from start to finish. We negated their quality wide boys and actually took the game to them out wide with the first half display exceptional.
We passed, moved, closed down with Wag and Hags completely running the show whilst Sim, Al, Ben and Eastons pace was a constant threat all through the game.
Very pleased with the commitment and the lads at the back were very well marshalled by Elksy with great tenacious displays from Pad and Harry.
Rarely does a Sunday club have 17 or 18 quality players but we do and it showed today because with Kingy, Herbie and Woody not selected the lads that came in showed that they want a place in the first 11.
3-4-3 works very well when we play at pace and hunt in packs and to be honest we should have buried them in the first half whilst even though they changed formation in the second half they rarely threatened and with a but of fortune or slightly more composure we would have won more easily.
I would like to say Thanks to Kiff as he will be missed and I think he has been great for us over the last 18 months and his goal record will take some beating over the coming seasons. I do not agree with his decision but I have no argument with his thoughts and appreciate his honesty - on behalf of all the squad "thanks" Kiff and you will always be welcome at the Old Boyz.
It is a squad game and it can be frustrating when you are on the bench but all credit to the 16 there today - great attitudes and all have a role to play with so many games left and numerous mid-week games ahead.
Final words for this week is today was a good day but the real battle re-commences next week against Bowden and we need to get back to winning in the league. We have to do the job next week as we then have 3 massive league games versus Throops, Blackbird and Kirby - if they are to count for anything Boyz we need to go and put on a performance at Harborough next week.
Kirby dropped points today and we all know where we believe we should finish (I certainly do!) - we now need to maintain the level of performance and put it in every week and I believe we will get the rewards we deserve - Up the Goldboyz!!
01.02.09 vs AFC Beaumont (H) League Drew 0-0
One enforced change with Herbs injured it was a recall for Elksy with Waggy unavailable we were down to the bare 14 with Matt making a welcome return alongside Easton and Mitch on the bench.
Match Ratings:
Scouse: 8 - Not overly tested but when he was he did well. Especially second half when he narrowed his angles well when left a bit exposed on a couple of occasions. Deserved a clean sheet and his kicking was very good which got us forward on a number of occasions.
Alex: 7 - worked hard and was switched into Midfield and Centre Half as we chased a goal whilst also trying to keep it tight. Played very well first half when the service was better and caused there defence a lot of problems.
Woody: 6.5 - steady but a bit frustrated. Had a tough game with his passing a little astray whilst never managed to get forward as much as usual. Not helped by the passing generally but stuck to his task defensively but will have better games.
Harry: 8 (MOM) - Not 100% fit but as committed as ever and was the best of the defensive unit especially in the second half when he was left to make a lot of last ditch challenges. Was marking one of the best strikers in the league and stood up to him well physically hardly giving him a sight of goal.
Kingy: 7 - Had a decent game but was quieter than normal and did not impose himself quite as well as last week. Kept going well and moved into midfield in an attempt to try and win the game but the sticky pitch did not aid his dribbling skills.
Pad: 6 - off the pace and by his own standards looked a couple of yards of the pace. Disappointing as last week he set the tone but was never at the races - no lack of commitment but looked heavy legged and needs to sharpen up for the big games ahead.
Elksy: 6 - not 100% and never got going. Carrying his thigh injury and may be in hindsight should have left it a couple of weeks to get it right. Frustrated himself and such a pity as before the inury was playing exceptionally well. Needs to get it 100% right so he is ready for the big games!!
Ben: 7 - started fantastic and looked very lively but as the teams passing dropped off and we lost our way he had very few opportunities to get on the ball. Still put in his usual high work rate and the few opportunities in the second half came from his good work.
Haggerty: 6.5 - skipper for the day but never really imposed himself as well as he can. First half was better whilst in the second half he tired and his ankle knock did affect his performance.
Sim: 6.5 - similar to Ben looked lively early on but lacked a bit of oomph and never really got away from their defence. Difficult conditions and poor service second half made him disappear a little. Has to learn to have an impact when ball is not at his feet.
Gurney: 7.5 - worked his socks off and in the last 20 minutes showed the commitment required by working all the way back in our box. Led the line to the best of his ability and tried very hard but the ball would not quite run. Nearly broke through to score but was not to be.
Subs:
Easton: 6.5 - came on at an unfamiliar RWB as we tried to push on. Tried hard and used his pace to great effect but then did not quite deliver with a cross or final ball but did give us an injection of pace.
Mitch: 6.5 - tried hard, maybe tried a bit too hard and his youthful appetite gave us a lift. Unlucky not to gain a penalty when a clumsy challenge looked a definite penalty. With games will learn to just select the right option but definitely gave us a lift when he came on.
Matt: - not on long enough to rate but he did come on and show his usual effort whilst it was good to have him back involved and his ankle looked as though it stood up well. With extra training and games he will have a part to play if he can stay fit.
Boyz, you are making me feel older with every week. One week we are excellent and then we are poor - feel like pulling my hair out today. The word I would use today was frustrating!
Not sure if it is a point gained or two points dropped but at least it was another clean sheet and the unbeaten league run is maintained although if not with a bit of luck.
No doubt we missed the Skipper today as it was ideal conditions for him and it was noticeable that we did not dominate the midfield as we usually do. However, I would not question the commitment but I am not sure we all gave 110% like we normally do and I think a few too many went through the motions a wee bit.
That may be a tad harsh but we need to step up now and win the next few games to ensure that come March we are in the shake up. Throops dropped two points at Beaumont Athletic and I believe that there will a lot of twists and turns yet.
I still believe that we have as good a chance as anyone but we do have to play to our maximum - we were missing a couple today and it will be interesting to see how we react.
A week off may do us a bit of good to get over the bumps and bruises - recharge the batteries Boyz and let us be ready to have a go at Legion (Div 1) in the Cup in a fortnights time. Training on the next two Wednesday's will be interesting as will selection for the cup tie!
25.01.09 vs Desford (H) League Won 6-1 - Played at Desford
FT: 6-1 (Ben, Herbs, Gurney, Sim, Woody, Harry)
HT: 2-0
No change from the starting eleven from the previous week. Mitch and Elksy returned to the bench alongside Easton, Wag and Kiff with Dave, Pez and Matt unavailable.
Match Ratings:
Scouse: 8 - Not very busy but normally that means Scouse is at his most dangerous!! However, concentrated very well and made a couple of good saves the best a great tip over from a long range effort which looked in all the way. Also was on his toes to deal with a few pass backs on a terrible surface - well done Scouse.
Alex: 9 (Mom) - Best show of the season and terrorised there midfielder and full back all game. Got forward all game and delivered numerous fantastic crosses (should have his hair cut more often) and had a few opportunities to score himself. Still got back to mark his man out of the game and made a number of crucial tackles or interceptions - more like his old self and running into form at the right time.
Woody: 8 (Goal Machine) - Another very good display which included a fantastic volleyed finish from 35 yards past a startled keeper.....(Ok Haggerty it was about 15 yards but still a quality strike). Got forward well and was more committed in the tackle than in previous weeks but maintained his scoring form with a goal two weeks running.#
Pad: 8 - Very effective and good to hear him organising for all but 20 minutes of the game he bossed the defence well. Made a number of excellent tackles and even had time to go on a couple of forays forward. Certainly kept Harry and King focused and was part of a defence which deserved a clean sheet (shocking decision by the ref) - just getting his fitness back before he goes on holiday
Kingy: 8 - not far behind Alex with an extremely committed and disciplined performance. After a dodgy game last week came through to show he wants to keep his shirt and never gave the striker a kick (not phrased that right - he actually kicked him all over the park
) but was very effective whilst also delivering quality balls from the back.
Harry: 8 - much better and showed his determination all game although beginning to rival Paddy for the title of "Grunter" - showed that honest commitment and competitiveness is the way to play. Was horrible all game with great physical challenges and decisive defending and even went forward to score a fantastic goal from the angle into the top right hand corner - well done Harry.
Herbs: 8 - skipper's type of surface and worked his nuts off with him covering every blade....all over the muddy pitch. Made his usual number of tackles but added more forward runs to his game which included linking up well with Al down the right. Had time to get forward to score the 2nd before half-time and another who is running into his best form........good timing with big games to come.
Haggerty: 8 - very controlled performance from the big man with him using his energy wisely on a sticky surface. Kept it simple but importantly hardly wasted the ball with simple passes played effectively but also kept the ball moving wide to allow the wing backs to get forward. Had a couple of opportunities to score but will I am sure have some shooting lessons from Woody at training
Ben: 8 - another very good performance and played the attacking midfield role excellently by linking the play and breaking from midfield. Also worked very hard and despite the conditions managed to carry the ball and dribble past their defence for fun. Got forward well all game and especially first half caused their defence endless problems and also showed guts to get stuck in and set us on our way with the crucial opening goal.
Gurney: 8.5 - top display from the old boy up front. Led the line and held the ball up which allowed the midfield to get forward. Also carried the ball forward at times to play others in whilst also giving their defence a torrid time with his movement. Good to see him looking more like his old self and deserved his goal and with a bit of luck could have had more. Also helped Sim by constantly talking to him which included setting up his goal.
Sim: 8 - got the goal he has been craving and hopefully will get him on a role with bucket loads to follow. Used his pace to good effect and on another day would have 5 but for the surface, good keeping and a bit of bad luck. Linked up well with Gurns but also worked hard and made some good runs to create space for others.
Subs:
Wag: 7 - came on and got on the ball well. The extra running he has been doing every day is paying off as he looked sharper when he came on. Got stuck in and also played the ball easy which allowed us to keep the momentum going forward.
Elksy: 7 - good to have him back and easing his way back to full fitness. As normal came on and won his tackles but also kept it simple by passing the ball wide to keep the wing backs moving forward. Showed a couple of glimpses of good skill to calmly get himself out of difficult spots.
Easton: 7 - more like the Easton in the first 10 games with lots of energy and pace. Worked back too and made a number of good runs forward and was a little unlucky not to score but showed a great attitude by running the line and then showed on the pitch he wants his place back.
Mitch and Kiffy were unfortunate not to get on but we have a long way to go and every member of the squad has a part to play.
Better, much much better.
That is more like the standards we have set ourselves against a side who I think were never allowed to get into their stride. The pitch at half time showed how much we had dominated with one half looking like it had been ploughed and the other like it had not been played on - we dominated them physically but you know what .....we played some superb football and deserved to be 5 or 6 up at half time.
Second half it paid off though because once the third went in their heads dropped and they tired whilst we relentlessly carried on going forward.
Refreshing to see us play the conditions extremely well - making our passes decisive but also getting the ball wide to allow Woody and Al to get forward. They also played some good balls up to the lads up front who benefited from good service from the defence and midfield. Fair play to Gurns and Sim whose movement constantly stretched the Desford defence and we played some of our best football of the season today.
Wow, is it tough now fellas because look at our bench - 5 quality players today who all have good reason to believe they should be in the team. The 3 that came on showed they want a place in the starting 11 and did there talking on the pitch with great effort. We are a squad and the maturity showed by all is commendable as everyone between now and the season finishing has a part to play. I know 2 or 3 were disappointed not to start but you know the way I work - if you play well you keep your shirt (No favourites - none (Ask Pad if you do not believe me - he has some stories he can tell you!!)).
Miss a game at your peril as you are likely to lose a place and find it hard to get it back - training is definitely helping and even those like Wag have taken upon themselves to get fit so keep up the effort and let us see if we can keep the turnout up at training.
I have to say that today was a pleasure to watch and like Matt said (good to see him encouraging and nearing a return) we are bloody good side when we are at it.
Long way to go with stiffer tests to come but if we maintain the team spirit and hardwork you never know where we may end up!!
18.01.09 vs Bees Knees (H) League Won 1-0
FT: 1-0 (Woody - great cross!)
HT: 1-0
I have sat thinking all afternoon what to write and it was only a post by our opponents today which has helped make my mind up what to write.
I am not going to do the normal report today other than to pick out a few performances of particular note with Alex, Woody, Herbs, Hags, Harry and Ben Edwards (outstanding). I also thought Scouse deserved a special mention as he was excellent today with not a great deal to do but made one or two fantastic saves at crucial times but was alert all game when he was left a wee bit exposed.
Not going to do a rant as I do believe that everyone gave 100% but we missed enough chances to have scored a bagful but it was hard work and endeavour which got us over the finishing line - but Dave will tell you that I was pretty nervous on the side as the last two weeks have not been great.
Which brings me back to John Meode's comments about us on the alliance website.............Quote:-
"Im happy with how we played today considering we had a lot of players out, didnt have a goalkeeper and the pitch was awful.
I had to play in goal 2nd half!!! first time ive ever played in goal. And didnt concede!!
They scored a lucky goal from a cross that went straight in the far top corner, and although they missed a couple of good chances we also had our chances too, missed 3 1on1s and hit the post.
we played 4-5-1 today and our striker got injured early and with no subs thought we might get hammered. Decent side Gutho, but not a chance they will win the league, kirby, western and throops were all better.
Very well reffed by the er ref whos name now escapes me, i will be disappointed if we dont get three points when we play them at home."
I am our harshest critic and I know you all think that - fair enough I can live with that because I know how good we are and can be. I can criticise you but I will not have some **** from another club suggest we are rubbish.
I believe that we have a squad of 19 or 20 players who are as good as anything in the alliance league (outside the prem maybe!) and I want to take this chance to put down a half season comment for everyone individually cause I do not want to come 2nd again and I am even more fired up now to make sure we do not throw this decent start away.
Just a few thoughts and comments:
*** EDITED BY PAD - The gaffers comments were an excellent read and as we were lacking any comments for this season - I have cut them and they can now be found on the managers comments page under Half-term report - END OF EDIT ***
Well I know that is the longest match report ever but if you read through all my bollocks above you will get the gist - we have a great squad of players which I believe is as good as anything in this Division and all credit to you when we are not at 100% we still grind out the results.
I will not labour on today because I think we all know we are a lot better than we showed but we won so we move on and I am sure a few of you will be frustrated with your own performances and it will make my selection next week even more diffiicult but we are a squad and I would remind everyone of that as keeping you all happy is not going to be easy over the coming weeks.
I think the team spirit, commitment and ability is the best I have been involved with on a Sunday and I want to pay credit to you all so lets get our heads back on it, put it in at training and on the pitch and show a few doubters that we are to be feared.
That is as much praise as you will get out of me at this stage. Now let us go and put Desford to the sword next Sunday - I cannot wait for the return game with Bees Knees and will remind you of his comments nearer the time (still fired up now even though I have written this!!
).
Up the GOLDBOYZ - as Delia once said "Lets be having you"
11.01.09 vs BMG (A) League Won 4-1
FT: 4-1 (Haggerty, Waggy, Herbs and Kiffy)
HT: 2-0
A couple of changes although the squad is nearing full fitness with Dave (Back), Matt (Ankle) and Clive (Knee) the only notable absentees. Late withdrawals from Mitch and Harry due to illness made selection a little easier. Although with big games in the next fortnight againts Bee Knees and AFC Beaumont means that the stronger the squad the better.
Started with the normal 3-5-2 - Elksy sweeping behind Pad and Kingy whilst it was good to see Scouse back in goal. Midfield was unchanged with Herbs, Haggs and Easton whilst Sim and Wag retained there spots up top. A strong bench of Kiff, Ben, Gurney and Pez meant any drop in performance would result in changes.
Ratings:
Scouse: 6 - Okay. Not at his best and needs games with his ankle still not 100%. Made a couple of decent stops but was hesitant off his line for the goal but that may have been rustiness. Not stretched too much but we need to get him 100% and also regain a bit of his confidence.
Alex: 8 - one of the few to perform and had a decent game. Got forward well at wing back in the first half and adjusted well at centre half in the second half.
Woody: 7 - steady as ever and did his job well down the left handside. Not as energetic as normal and little off the pace but compared to a few he looked like as fit as a fiddle!
Pad: 6 - not at his best. Had an early knock and never got going with him looking a bit off the pace whilst not as dominant as normal.
Kingy: 7 - steady but not as assured as in previous games with him missing his centre half partner. Still one of few voices to be heard and very much the voice at the back whilst kept it simple to ensure that no silly mistakes unnecessary pressure.
Elksy: 6 - not 100% and not his normal self. Bit slow and tried to keep it simple to cover for his knock. Battled valiantly but had to succumb in the end and came off in the second half.
Haggerty: 7 - much better in midfield and gets bored at the back (note for me - not the first time I have said that!). First half competed well in midfield and got forward well. Scored a simple tap in during the second half but was missed in midfield during the last 30 minutes.
Herbs: 8 (MOM) - carried the midfield second half and got up and down as well as ever. Although not as fit due to the break the 90 minutes will get him going and will need some big games from the Skip over the second half of the season. Scored a beauty from a yard with his nose but they all count!
Easton: 6 - quiet game and never really got on the ball like he can. Part of a midfield in the second half that never dominated as they should have done. Tried to get forward but did not get many opportunities as the ball did not stick up top too well and invariably came back too quick.
Wag: 6 - Scored in the first half but at times was starved of quality balls to feet and ended up too deep which left Sim a bit isolated. Moved to wing back in the second half and managed to get on the ball a bit more whilst also providing a few quality balls into the box.
Sim: 6 - struggled to get going and could hardly stand up in the first half. Started in the first 15 minutes quite well by stretching their defence and got into a few good positions but lacked a bit of composure in front of goal.
Subs:
Gurney: 6 - another who looked a bit rusty and never really got going. At least held the ball up and provided a target although not at his best.
Kiff: 7 - scored and looked up for it. Having missed or had to play in goal he was keen to make an impression. Certainly showed a good attitude and gave us breathing space with a good finish for the 3rd. Needs to get 100% but good to have him back in the squad.
Ben: 7 - looked lively and certainly found more red shirts in his appearance as sub than most during the first 60 minutes. Got forward well but took a bad knock and had to go up front for the last 10 minutes.
Pez - not used but ran the line and put it in for the team with good encouragement from the side. Also good stuff from Matty who was vocal from the side too whilst Good Luck to Clive who came along to support and goes under the knife this week.
Overall - job done and as the Skipp said you can only beat what is put in front of you and we did that - however we were rubbish if I am honest.
First half was very patchy and the second half was as bad. First half to be fair we never lacked shape which we did second half. We only looked better up top when the subs were made but this was at the expense of keeping our shape.
We looked a little rusty although it is only two weeks since we played and shows that we need to play every week to keep the momentum going. We missed Harry badly at the back and Mitch will be keen to make an impression at training I am sure.
We never looked too threatened but we were fortunate that they were a bit toothless up front as a better side could have embarrassed us today. I was a little disappointed that other than Kingy and Herbs the appetite was not as good as normal - may be too many New Year beers had taken its toll.
I got it wrong with the team from the start and will not make that mistake next week - training will be interesting as it well help me pick the team for next Sunday. Very rarely do I pick players who were unavailable the week before or change a winning team but I will be this week Boyz - rest assured make every effort to be at training if you can!! (Only good excuses will be accepted).
I had the fixtures wrong as we play Bees Knees next week not Desford and they only narrowly lost to Throops and I have been told they are a good young side so we will need to improve.
Looking for a reaction and I know it may be a bit harsh but we will need to do better!!
28.12.08 vs Western Athletic (H) League Won 7-3
FT: 7-3 (Kingy 2, Haggerty 2, Mitch, Woody, Easton)
HT: 4-2
A few changes as we had Dave, Gurney, Ben all unavailable whilst Elksy started at only 70% with Kiff also less than fully fit on the bench. This meant that we started with a 3-5-2 with Elksy sweeping behind the normal centre halfs with Haggerty and Easton joining Herbs in midfield. Sim returning with Wag alongside him up front. we welcomed Pez back on the bench joined by Mitch, Kiff and slightly rushed back Scouse.
Ratings:
Pad: 8 - kept a clean sheet until he was rushed back into Sweeper with Elksy forced off with his injury. Looked a bit portly after a bit of xmas pud but all credit he marshalled the lads at the back. He kept it simple was typically committed and actually did very well with a good second half performance - needs games and will now get them at Sweeper if Scouse is fit enough to return.
Alex: 8 - not at his best first half with him not going forward as we know he cans but second half was tremendous. Took the game to them down the right and at times was like a right winger by exploiting the spaces but never got caught out defensively. Excellent second half Al - keep up that level of performance.
Woody: 8 - had a good game against a very tough opponent. An extremely quick and skillful winger was kept very quiet by good solid defending whilst Woody also had the energy to go forward and take the game to them. Also scored a crucial goal with a nice right footed finish to give us a bit of breathing space.
Kingy: 8 - he and Harry were as ever fully committed and Kingy especially second half was very dominant and also scored a great goal with a lovely half volleyed finish which rocketed into the bottom right hand corner. Looks like a centre half when he keeps it simple and then plays when he has time high up the pitch but good to hear him vocally and showed a good example at the back.
Harry: 8 - excellent 2nd half with a fully committed and tough tacking performance. Did well against a tricky opponent who Harry never gave time to settle and he out muscled and out fought his opponent. Plays the game with a smile on his face and never moaned once despite me moaning at him!
Elksy: N/A - tried to play despite not being fully fit and was disappointed to be forced off so early - we need him back but only when he is 100%.
Herbs: 9 - excellent performance from the skipper who enjoyed the midfield battle and was his normal strong self despite dislocating his shoulder in the first half. Battled, won tackles got forward and even had time for a great 25 yarder which was well held by their keeper. A highly competitive midfield battle got a bit hot with Herbs showing great restraint not to react despite their Ginger midfielder attempting a chest butt on him. Good show Herbs.
Easton: 8 - asked to play the attacking midfield role but to show discipline and work back. Tried extremely hard and only stopped working when he tired in the last 20 minutes but never gave up and even proved he can work back by committing a foul on the edge of our box when tracking back. Got forward well and was selective when he did this but also scored a good goal with an excellent finish which came at a crucial stage of the game. Better but more to come Easton!!
Haggerty: 9 (MOM) - fantastic performance. Proved a point by playing so well in midfield and it may be that he was sober which helped. He got up and down extremely well but gave us a bit of grit in the middle of the park whilst showing his terrific ability on the ball. Also scored two excellent goals one of which he carried the ball twenty yards before bending a great finish into the bottom corner. Hates playing at the back and no doubting his ability and showed that he can put in a decent shift when motivated. Excellent show Haggs but you have set the standard of work rate - nothing less will be expected mate!
Wag: 8 - played up top and linked play extremely well. Created time and space with good touches whilst keeping it simple by playing others in and showed at times the good touch he has with good close control with him rarely giving the ball away. Maybe could have got in the danger area a tad more but given me a serious headache with Gurney, Ben and Kiff still to comeback.
Sim: 8 - worked hard up top and despite getting over a virus never stopped working. Stretched their defence with his pace and went on one great run where he beat 3 o4 4 and nearly scored in the first half. Linked up well with Waggy but also chose the right option on a number of time to play others in. Stood up well to the physical challenges and never gave their defence anytime to rest.
Subs:
Scouse: 8 (for Elksy) - came on without too much time to think about it or prepare. Not 100% but looked ready for a return. Needs to build his confidence back up in his ankle but looked good especially second half when he made a few decent saves and looked fully committed. Will have been disappointed with the first two goals but never let him effect him and second half looked more assured. Good to have him back and hopefully will be fit enough for a run of games.
Mitch: 8 (for Sim) - only got 20 minutes but the kid has huge potential. Must be a pain in the arse for centre halfs to see Sim come off only to be faced with Mitch. Quick, confident and played very well when he came on. Stretched their defence , missed a couple of chances but scored a good header and showed a good character as took a few kicks but got up and carried on. Putting big pressure on Sim and the boys up front.
Kiffy and Pez - not used but encouraged well from the side.
Overall Boyz I have to say I was pretty impressed especially second half where it is never easy against 10 men we controlled the game. Even at 11 versus 11 we looked very dangerous and deserved to be 4-2 up before the lad got himself sent off.
We gifted them two goals but we played some good stuff and a couple of moves were excellent with some great football. We talked pre-match about intensity and matching them in the commitment stakes which we not only did but actually we looked the hungrier team who wanted to win more.
Teams keep talking about our size and that we are old boys but we are more than that and again on Sunday we have a very good set of players. All credit to a number of you who despite not playing regularly or regularly playing 90 minutes you came in and showed that you want your place in the team. Despite having to switch keepers again we also never got too panicky when we conceded and carried on playing and deservedly won.
The scoreline did not flatter us and their keeper made a number of good saves and I could not ask anymore from you all including subs who all showed the team spirit.
We will now be there to shot at though because I think teams will now recognise that we are decent especially as Throops and Kirby were there watching on Sunday.
We have put ourselves back in the race with recent results and now we have to push and my target is that we remain unbeaten between now and the end of the season - do that Boyz and we can win the league I think there are twists and turns to come.
All 19 of you have roles to play and even those who may like to be playing longer should remember that as a squad we need to support each other.
Great effort Sunday - we bag the 3 points and now we move on and this should give us confidence that we can beat anyone. I am not going to give any of you a minutes peace because we all know where we should finish and if we all perform we will achieve our target!!
Happy New Year and Well Done Boyz an excellent 2008!!
21.12.08 vs BMG (H) League Won 4-0
FT: 4-0 (Gurney 2, Mitch and Stef)
HT: 3-0
A couple of changes from the previous week with Sim in his sick bed and a change in formation to 3-4-3. Wag up front with Elksy into midfield and Haggerty in at sweeper. Ben making his first start of the season up front as part of a 3 man attack. A strong bench included Mitch, Dave, Kiff and Easton.
Ratings:
Pad: 8 (Mom) - may be third choice but performed extremely well with a well earned clean sheet. Gathered all of his crosses and also left exposed more than was necessary but made a number of good saves. Also swept well and made a few last ditch tackles - will not like it but played extremely well although also missed at the back. Dilemmas for the game versus Western with Scouse nearing fitness.
Alex: 7 - dependable as ever and got forward well although did not get as much as the ball as he would have liked. Still dominated down the right and moved to left wing back and did extremely well down the left getting more on the ball than down the right.
Woody: 6 - not at his best and maybe not quite 100% after a knock the previous week. Still got forward and nearly added to his goal tally but for a bad miss (Haggerty will talk anyone interested through it!). Will be keen to put in a better performance next week if selected.
Haggerty: 6 - returned after a few weeks out and got bored at Sweeper second half with him spending more time up front than at the back. Still good to see him back in the fold and will have benefited from a full 90 minutes.
Kingy: 7 - decent performance although not easy to clear his lines and became a bit hoarse second half as was left a bit exposed by the those in front and behind! Still worked hard and had a few opportunities to get forward but showed discipline to stop at the back.
Harry: 6 - steady, but an average performance by his standards with not as many crunching tackles as normal. Not quite as tight to his man as usual and was part of a defence which was not as commanding as usual.
Elksy: 6 - scored the first goal with a good glancing header but generally he had dominated in the middle of the park as he usually does. Looked a bit flat and never really got going until an injury forced an early end to his game.
Herbie: 7 - industrious as ever and fully committed with an extremely difficult surface making the midfield hard work. Not quite his usual abrasive self but in a second half which we lacked shape he kept going until the final whistle.
Waggy: 7 - started as part of a three up top before moving centrally up front and then into midfield. Another who needed the run and 90 minutes will have benefited him with some big games coming up. Worked hard and did well in midfield when on the ball in the 2nd half just needs to work both ways when in midfield so as to not leave runners free.
Gurney: 7 - scored two and led the line well. Will have felt disappointed not to have notched a hat trick with a couple of chances missed but was a handful as usual.
Ben: 6 - first start and worked hard although the surface did not help his usual dribbling skills and found few opportunities to get forward as his norm. Still gave the midifeld a bit of pace and links the midfield well. Another who will have benefited from a full 90.
Subs:
Kiffy: 6 for Elksy - came on to play up front. Won his headers and gave us a target which gave Gurns a bit if space but looked rusty and still not 100% fit with his thigh injury not quite there. Good to have him back working his way back to fitness.
Easton: 6 for Woody - played at right wing back after losing his spot from the previous week. Showed a good attitude when dropped and worked hard when he came on. Needs to really work hard to get his place back and earn his own starting spot - great going forward but sometimes lacks discipiline defensively.
Mitch: 7 for Gurney - showed he wants to earn a starting spot and although still finding his feet brought a bit of life to a flat 2nd half with his pace and work rate. Took his chance well and could have had another whilst listening to the older lads will benefit his game over the coming weeks/months.
Generally, job done with 3 points never in doubt but a bit after the Lord Mayor's show with an average performance on a glue pot of a pitch.
We huffed and puffed and there keeper was their best player but we were not as dominant and disciplined as we normally are. We will need to up our game in a big 6 pointer next week with the title looking between 4 teams - Kirby, Throops, Western and ourselves although we have a number of game to catch up which is never easy.
We move on and let's be up for next week and prove to them that we are a bit more than a bunch of old kickers - that is there view any way
14.12.08 vs Balloonatics (H) County Cup 1-1 Lost 6-5 on Penalties
FT: 1-1 (Gurney Pen)
HT: 1-0
No changes from the starting eleven last week although Ben and Haggerty joined Wag and Mitch on the bench. Mitch was unlucky not to get a run after impressing last week but his time will come in the next few games. The injury list still too long with Scouse, Kiff, Matt all on the side showing their support.
Ratings: 9 to all 14 Individuals.
A tough county cup draw against one of the favourites from the Hinckley League who are unbeaten all season and romping away with Division 3. The challenge was not made any easier with a dog of a pitch which was barely fit to play on having given up home advantage to get the game on.
The match started at a very fast pace and we were quickest out of the traps with a good work rate which started at the back with Elksy marshalling the defence well. The midfield was closing down extremely well with Herbie everywhere and Easton trying to support the front two.
Although not easy to play on we created the better opportunities in the first half with Gurney having a close range chance which he could not quite force home. Several corners and set-pieces also looked dangerous whilst Pad handled extremely the few long range efforts that they managed on goal.
As half-time approached Alex galloped forward and nipped in front of their defender and was brought down for a definite penalty. After much altercation with their No 16 (I know I was out of order but Boy did he get under my skin
) Gurney stepped up to slot home and deservedly put us 1 up.
Last 10-15 minutes of the first half were excellent with us hunting in packs and never allowing them to get going. Half Time and we deservedly led.
Second half was underway and similar to the first we looked the hungrier and had a few half chances to stretch our lead with Herbs nearly scoring with his head from a corner. Against the run of play we gave the ball away and were a bit stretched allowing their centre forward a few yards of space to score with an excellent chip from 25 yards. 1 all and it could go either way.
For the remainder of the second half we pushed and always looked the more likely to score with Sim immense up front all game coming close to scoring the winner except for a fantastic tip over from their keeper.
Ben and Wag were introduced in the second half with Dave and Easton having worked hard. The introduction of Wag and Eddie gave Herbs a bit of fresh support and the midfield battle was being won by the Old Boyz.
Extra-time was tight and the pitch by this stage was like glue with little chance to play much football but the commitment and endeavour was superb with the Old Boyz pushing for the winner. Several set pieces and corners were close to forcing us a winner but the ball would not quite fall in the box with Sim, Eddie and Wag going close.
Full time and into the penalty shoot-out and despite not being able to see the penalty spot the standard of penalties was very good. Unfortunately despite the best endeavours of all we were beaten on the 11th penalty to go out 6-5 on penalties.
We were magnificent today and it was probably the proudest I have been of any team because we were fully committed to a man - this includes all the lads on the side (Matt, Mitch, Kiff, Scouse who all got behind the team). The 14 who played gave everything and did not deserve to lose and were the better team against the best side we have faced this or last season - I might be proved wrong but they will take some stopping from winning the cup.
From Pad at keeper through to Sim and Gurney up front we were excellent with the work rate by all a real pleasure to watch. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the game and genuinely thought we were the only team going to win the game.
We have proved ourselves to be a match for anyone at this level (I believe we can go even higher too) and now we have to turn this excellent first half of the season into a trophy. We can win this league if we play at this standard week in and week out so we need to be proud of today and use the performance in a positive way by getting two crucial wins over the next fortnight to close th gap at the top in Div 3.
We play Western Athletic next week who are second and believe that they are the best in the Division and believe us to be a bunch of old kickers. I want to see us as fired up next Sunday to go out and put on a performance with a result that sends a signal to the rest of this Division. Plenty to play for and we need to ensure that we kick start our league campaign next week.
Well done today Boyz - fantastic and extremely proud of everyone at the club!
07.12.08 vs West End (A) BW Cup Won 5-1
FT: 5-1 (Gurney 2, Wightman, Sim and Mitch)
HT: 3-1
A couple of changes from the previous week with Kiff injured it was Pad's turn to don the gloves with Easton returning to the starting eleven. Wag and Mitch on the bench. The injury list still lengthy with Kiff, Matt, Haggerty, Scouse, Clive and Eddie all out injured. Pez and Ben were unavailable but Ben is back next week.
A bit of good news in that hopefully Kiff, Haggerty and Scouse are not long away from returning.
Ratings:
Pad: 8 - 3rd choice keeper and helping the team by going between the sticks with Kiff and Scouse out injured. A much better performance than last time he was in the nets. Swept well when required and his handling was good with a couple of good saves thrown in. Not overly busy but did his job well.
Alex: 8 - Good display with plenty of the ball for a change and looked dangerous when going forward. Marked his opponent out of the game and linked up well with the front two and with a touch of luck would have scored too.
Woody: 7 - Not 100% fit but still put in a display with his normal work rate and still gave the team plenty of width down the left. Also put in a number of quality corners and free-kicks.
Kingy: 8 - more commanding this week and good to hear him vocally encouraging or demanding more from the team. Won his headers and despite the lycra fitted shorts managed to find time in the second half to go on a couple of his charging runs. Left his shooting boots at home (or has he worn them out for the season
!!). Solid and effective display. To be fair got the ball rolling with a good shot which the keeper could not handle for Sim to follow up.
Harry: 8 - good display against a lively striker who Harry outbattled and ensured that his opponent never got into the game. Won the ball well and good to see him keeping it simple, clearing his lines and not overplaying on a tricky surface.
Elksy: 8 - might not enjoy it but swept extremely well. Kept it simple but commanded the defence, ensured the centre half's were picked and kept up a good line at the back. Also really pleased that he did not overplay which may have meant him not being as involved as he would like but it was a good performance for the team.
Dave: 8 - good to see him getting back to his performances of last season. Quietly effective with the simple pass played and physically won the battle with Herbs in the middle of the park. Legs may not be there but the brain is and used his experience to keep the ball moving and played a lot of simple passes effectively first time. Unlucky not to score but for Kingy blocking him off at a corner.
Herbs: 8 - worked his socks off as usual and a much improved display on last week. May not find it easy on a Monday to get out of bed but there are a few seasons left in the old dog - we all need to work on him (he thinks he is getting too old!). Never gave there midfield time and although the surface in the middle was tough he got up and down all game whilst listening to there midfield they were sick of him biting there ankles. Good show Herbs.
Easton: 7 - asked him to get back to playing how he was a few weeks back. Took his goal extremely well with a fast break and a cool finish. First half his pace was noticeable and linked up well with the front two. Faded a bit second half but certainly worked hard and showed he wants his place back.
Gurney: 8 (Mom) - Has given us a real edge up front and their defenders could not cope with him and Sim. Led the line well and linked up well with the midfield whilst also got behind the defence to deliver a number of dangerous crosses. Slotted home his two penalties with ease and only denied another trick by a good save from the keeper.
Sim: 8 - much better and for an hour was more like his old self. Linking up well with Gurney and beginning to make better runs with every week. Showed not only his pace all game but also his dribbling and distribution were better than recent weeks. Got the ball rolling with a great rebound finish to react quickest and also ran their centre half into the ground to the point that he resorted to kicking lumps out of him.
Subs:
Wag: 7 - Mr Versatile came on at left wing back and as usual was tidy and accomplished with good distribution. Has showed great attitude and maturity in the last 3 weeks because despite only being sub he has not moaned once. Itching to get his place back but will do whatever is required for the team - I sense coming back to form and pushing for a starting place.
Mitch: 7 - only trained with us for the past 2 weeks but already I sense we have a young prospect who will only improve! Has a good attitude and listens which will help over the coming months as he learns to adapt to men's football. Came on and showed a lot of pace and work rate which just when their defence thought they had seen Simmy off had the prospect of another spring chicken running the legs off them - nice finish to get off the mark.
A good display which despite the tricky surface had spells of our best football of the season. Some of the football in the first half was excellent with plenty of sharp passing supported by good pacey attacking out wide and through the middle.
Once we got two up we relaxed and played whilst also maintaining the work rate to never let West End get a foothold in the game. I believe they are as good as anyone in Div 3 and in both games so far we have over ran them.
Second half we dropped off a little with our passing not quite as good but we always looked comfortable and with a touch of luck could easily have scored a few more.
We are in good shape going into a crucial part of the season with the County Cup next week and two tough games over Christmas.
Next week is a different game altogether as I understand they are a very good side who have not been beaten all season and fancy that they will win the Cup. We will have to raise our performance by 20% and all players including subs will have to be right at it from the first whistle.
Well done today but I would like to think that we will have a good turnout at training on Wednesday as I have a few selection dilemma's for next week!!
30.11.08 vs Sparta Moshdock (H) Cup Lost 6-1
FT: 6-1 (Gurney)
HT: 2-0
No changes from the previous week with Wag, Easton and Hag still on the bench.
Boyz, I have decided not to write a full report with ratings this week - because I am angry, no not at all because I believe that we all know we fell below our usual standards. However, I am not going to sit and slate you all because I think we had a few mitigating circumstances and second half we were as good as them for long periods.
I believe that most of you know you were average today with one or two exceptions but unfortunately too many were not quite there today.
I would like to thank Kiff for putting it in he was nowhere near 100% fit and still volunteered to go between the sticks and has probably ruled himself out for 4-6 weeks by being so brave - for the team.
I know views were exchanged at half time and a bit of passion does not harm as long as it is not personal. I got it wrong by asking Kiff to play which did not help matters today. We have players carrying knocks and maybe I need to allow one or two to get over these and with it being cup again next week we can go and enjoy playing which we seem to forget today (me included!).
Not going to make lots of excuses because on the day we were beaten by the better team - fair play. Good luck to Dandillo senior's team in the next round - they have some decent players and will take some beating. In my opinion the scoreline flattered them but they were at it from the off and deserved there win.
In recent weeks we have shown we are a decent side and I know you will be like me frustrated more than anything else that we did not do ourselves justice but it happens and I am proud of the effort in recent weeks so let's forget all about it and look forward to next week.
I for one will be glad to play an away game as our home pitch is a mess and needs a bloody roller on it - hopefully Pad will sort out with N&L.
I would like to see a bit of spirit and see most of you who can be at training (apologies I missed last week's but I will be there this week) make the effort to show - Head's Up we move on and We are a teamso we win together and lose together.
23.11.08 vs West End (H) League Won 5-0
FT: 5-0 (Gurney 3, Elksy and Kiff (pen))
HT: 2-0
A couple of changes from the previous week with Sim being recalled and Dave starting his first game of the season. Wag and Easton being dropped to the bench whilst Ben made a welcome return to the squad only to find himself 15th man - fair play as he never complained and will undoubtedly make a point in the coming weeks.
Ratings:
Kiff: 8 - another stint between the sticks on a bitter morning in difficult conditions for a keeper. Very composed and assured with not a great deal to do but when called upon his handling was good with his distribution excellent. Had time to step up for a penalty and out foxed the keeper to bury it in the top right hand corner.
Alex: 8 - good display down the right and got forward well with him involved in a number of good moves with two or three fantastic crosses. His confidence has returned and his pace down the right was a threat all game. Did a good job containing there left winger who looked a good player but had no appetite to get stuck in especially with Al constantly closing him down.
Woody: 8 - Mr Consistent and had a very good game down the left. Never backed out of any challenges and gave us good width down the left whilst containing his winger with ease. Delivered some great corners too which were a constant threat.
Pad: 8 - Good display with a no nonsense display and it was good that he was not seen too much which meant that the lads in front had done good jobs. At crucial times still gave the centre half's a bit of verbal to maintain concentration and when they were slightly off their men was quick to correct the situation. Went in between sticks for the last 15 minutes and managed a clean sheet.
Kingy: 8 - hardly gave his opponent a kick and second half had a bit more time to carry out the ball whilst rarely overplayed. In tricky underfoot conditions stood his opponent up well and was part of a good defensive display. Getting better with every game at the back and looking more like a centre half with every game - sorry Kingy
Harry: 8 - slightly indecisive in the first half but stepped up well second half. Attacks the ball very well and when he makes his mind up to put his foot in usually wins the ball. Today had a determined game and although not quite at his best he still put in a good effort and rarely did his opponent get away from him.
Herbie: 9 - very good display by the skipper with him covering every blade of grass and his physical tackling was too much for their midfield. Out battled all of their midfield in 50:50's and kept Hayden particularly quiet which is no mean feet. He and Dave compliment each other very well and it left more room and time for Elksy to get forward.
Ash: 8 - first start of the season and his patience has paid off in recent weeks. Not spectacular today but still won a lot of his tackles and noticeable from the side how he plays it easy and still had time for a couple of moments of individual skill with a couple of good dribbles. Part of a 3 man midfield which dominated throughout and laid the platform for a good display. Good to have him back in the mix!
Elksy: 9 (MOM) - outstanding and the best player on the pitch. Now he is playing a role in the team for the team he is making a big impact. Never doubted his ability but in recent weeks has been patient to get his place back and when given the opportunity has played for the team. When he keeps it simple passes and moves he is extremely effective and in the first 20 mins ran the show with great tackling and passes wide to Al and Woody. Scored a good free-kick to get us going and was involved in most of the play going forward. Well done Stef!!
Sim: 8 - much better and although he did not score he played very well alongside Gurney and their defenders could not handle his pace. Much better to see him right up top and created space for Gurney by taking defenders away. Movement was much better with runs between the centre halfs and behind the full backs and his touch/passing was better than recent weeks. Just needs a bit of luck and the goals will follow.
Gurney: 9 - another great performance by the old boy up front. His close control and strength were exceptional today and their centre halfs could not handle him all game. Scored 3 and could have had another couple with one effort hitting the bar. Also won the penalty and took his goals very well with very composed finishes. Deceptively good in the air and won plenty of flick ons and the most noticeable thing is the way he holds the ball up and plays others in. Well played Lee - Keep it going!
Subs:
Easton: 7 - tried hard when he came on and maybe was trying a touch too hard. Closed down and had one or two opportunities to score and another couple of opportunities where he should have passed but certainly never let the defenders rest when came on.
Wag: 7 - rarely seen on the bench but came on and his usual quality was evident until he got near the goal and then whether on his right or left it just would not go in. Still got one great effort on target which the keeper pulled off a great save to tip his effort over.
Haggerty: 7 - not 100% and struggling. My fault as I should have rested him to let his groin get better. Still put his tackles in and on couple of occasions went close to scoring with composure in the box only to be thwarted by the keeper. Need's to rest his groin so leave him alone Woody this week
We keep the run going and two back to back league wins have put us up to fourth with games in hand. With Kirby losing and I sense a lot more twists to come we are back in the title hunt.
Today we played a team who I think will be there or thereabouts come the end of the season and today we outplayed them with the greater will to win also evident. The teamwork and effort is exceptional and when we put in that level of effort I believe we will be a match for anyone and I genuinely mean anyone. To look at the bench and see four quality players who would get in all teams at our level with others not fit also on the side it shows we have a great squad.
Everyone has a role to play and I was really pleased with the attitude of several players today - Kiff (never complained), Easton and Wag (despite being dropped never moaned and encouraged from the side!) and Ben (who despite me hassling him to comeback never got on and also showed a great attitude). You all have important roles and it is the team work that is being rewarded with good results.
We made them look ordinary today and if you look at their recent results no one has got near them let alone out play them. We were physical all over the park and I am a bit sick of reading other teams comments that we are a big physical team because you know what we can play. Let them think we what they like - keep our views to ourselves and keep letting results take care of themselves. I am especially looking forward to Moshdock next week as they are high in Div 2 and believe we are no more than a big physical bunch - lets make a point next week!
First half was good with two well deserved goals putting us ahead with Elksy's great free kick putting us on the road to victory. However, at 2 nil the next goal after half time was important and we came out and scored two quick goals with good finishes by Gurney making it comfortable. I missed the fifth (fetching Pads' gloves) but understand that Gurns completed his trick with a great finish. We could have 2 or 3 more with a bit of luck but it was a comprehensive victory against a good side.
However, a cautionary note we are not even half way through the season but having started the season poorly we have pulled it round now do not blow it. We have three cup games against three good sides - Div 2 flying high, West End (away) and a Hinckley side who are unbeaten. If we can progress in the cups then we will have set up ourselves nicely for some big cup games whilst I believe we are back in the hunt for the title!!
Well done today - I can honestly say I am enjoying watching you all play and remember it is a squad game so well done to all including Scouse who is containing his frrustration extremely well by serving up great grub after the game (where were the onions!!)
16.11.08 vs Beaumont Athletic (A) League Won 3-1
FT: 3-1 (Gurney 2 and Woody - beauty!!)
HT: 1-1
A couple of changes from the previous weeks starting 11 with Elksy and Gurney earning starting spots after impressing last week. Haggerty-Wood and Sim the unlucky ones to miss out. Started 3-4-3 with Elksy and Herbs in the middle of the park, Pad Sweeping behind Harry and Kingy whilst up front Gurney was flanked by Wag and Easton. Sim, Hags and Dave on the bench.
Ratings:
Kiff: 9 - not easy conditions for keepers with a boggy surface and a greasy wet ball. However, as always Kiff never let us down between the sticks with an excellent composed display. Quiet first half and only beaten when unluckily beaten by a far post effort off the post. Second half for long spells had little action but when Beaumont pressed he made 2 or 3 very good stops to keep us in front.
Harry: 8 - stuck to his task and won his battle with his opponent. Kept his discipline and used his physical strength to good effect against a lively and quick opponent. Took a nasty knock to his head but showed his usual bravery by getting up and carrying on. Part of a well disciplined performance by the defence.
Kingy: 8 - first half was on a crusade to get sent off with constant chatter to the ref. However, he defended manfully and another who got the better of his opponent. Very disciplined for Kingy with few runs forward but won his headers and was noticeable to hear him encouraging and talking from the back.
Pad: 8 - made a long journey to get back for the game and played very well. Marshalled the defence and kept is simple with clearances that were effective and on a few occasions when he was left with a man made very well timed tackles to win the ball. Only made two errors with forays forward - one of which was expensive but otherwise kept the shape and was part of an excellent defensive display.
Alex: 8 - had a very good game and showed great character to keep his head up after conceding an unlucky OG. First half got forward well and second half got even stronger especially in the last 20 minutes when legs were tiring he went on runs to keep us in possession and took the game to them. Still convinced there is more to come and marked his opponent out of the game.
Woody: 8 - another who played very well which was topped with a great strike to score the important second goal with a 20 yarder into the top right hand corner (straight out of Haggerty's text book!!). Easily out played his opponent and especially second half got forward very well to provide width down the left hand side.
Herbs: 9 - Led by example and I am going to get his birth certificate checked as ran all game and put himself into every tackle as though his life depended upon it (some of theres did when he went into some of the tackles!!!! Ouch). A good foil to Elksy and the pair of them competed very well with great work rate and endeavour coupled with some simple and effective passing.
Elksy: 9 - Earned a recall last week and justified with his best performance of the season especially second half where he was involved all over the park. He won his battle against his opponent got the ball down and kept it simple on a difficult midfield surface. Second half he and Herbs stepped up to the plate and were instrumental in keeping the game at a high tempo.
Wag: 8 - Started up front and moved into midfield as the ball was not finding him in the first 25 minutes. Linked things when the ball came to him and although not at his best he never stopped working and on a surface which did not suit his ball skills still showed glimpses of his quality.
Easton: 8 - Not his best display but similar to everyone in the 14 gave his all and never stopped running. Pushed up top alongside Gurns and never quite managed to effect the game like he has in recent weeks but still worked to stretch their defence.
Gurney: 9 (MOM) - As the saying goes "Different Gravy" and the best striker on the pitch. Led the line worked very hard and never gave the defenders an easy ride. The centre halfs could not handle him physically and used his experience to link play at times whilst also showed his goal coring instinct with two good finishes. Makes goal scoring look easy and if only he could tell the time!!
Subs:
Sim: 8 - Disappointed to be left out but it did not show when he came on. Helped stretch the defence and linked up well with Gurney to create the third goal. Worked hard and frightened their defence to death when he came on and showed he wants his place back.
Haggerty: 8 - Unfortunately not 100% bothe because of his groin injury sustained at training and because in his own words he could not see the end of his nose before kick off (how did he get the team bus to the ground??). Still came on despite his impairment to get stuck in and help close the game out in the last 30 minutes.
Dave: 8 - may only have been the last 15-20 minutes but helped give us a presence in the middle of the park alongside Herbs which enabled Elksy to give us a bit of pace in the last few minutes.
Rarely do I say it but today was an excellent team performance against the best team we have faced this season in my opinion. We may not have zipped the ball around like we can and I know the surface did not allow it but we showed how much we are a team and secondly how much we wanted it. We fell behind rather unluckily with a great cross proving difficult to defend in one of their rare attacks in the first half but we dug in and scored a deserved equaliser before half time.
Every member of the 14 gave it all and the 5 or 6 on the side also gave good encouragement and today proved that we are as good as anything in this Division. I think they had some very good players and are a young fit team who if we had let them play would have caused us problems. But we never let them play other than for a 10-15 minute spell when we went 2-1 up - they have said they were awful but I actually think you stopped them playing and importantly were the better team throughout.
We had more chances then them and rarely looked too strectched at the back and on the few occasions they did get through Kiff was excellent with good handling and great reflexes.
This is a signal boys that if you put your minds to it we can beat anyone at this level (or better!!) now we have to build on this and keep the run going. One or two did not play as well as they can but the big difference is you are all playing for each other and collectively we are a real force when you show the commitment you did today.
This is a squad game and all 14 contributed. It could be a long season and everyone has a part to play including the injured and unavailable players.
Standard set so enjoy the feeling for a few days before we move onwards and we will need to repeat this level of performance next week against West End. Nothing less will do and it would be good to see you all at training - it counts!!
09.11.08 vs BMG (H) - Sunday Trophy County Cup Won 8-2
FT: 8-2 (Easton 3, Gurney 2, Elksy, Kiff (Pen) and.....................wait for it....................................HERBIE (You watch now he will get a run going).
HT: 2-1
No changes from the starting 11 the previous week although Pad started in goal, with Haggs sweeping, Wag in midfield and Kiff up front. Good to have Matty back in the squad (keep up with play next week!!!!!) and welcome addition on the bench. Still missing Pez and Ben but otherwise at full strength apart from the big loss of Scouse!!!!!!!!!!! Started with the usual 3-4-3.
Ratings:
Pad: 8 - not so good between the sticks but put in a good stint at sweeper with a no nonsense display. Used his experience in the second half by pushing the team up and kept it simple by clearing his lines and put in up the pitch. Least said about his keeping the better!
Harry: 8 - typically tenacious and competitive. Battled hard and won his fair share of tackles - good to see he left the sand wedge at home and in trying conditions defended well.
Kingy: 8 - not a footballing centre halfs surface but did well to defend properly and kept it simple. Stood up well and second half had a bit more time to play his way out from the back. Good show Kingy.
Haggerty: 7.5 - not at his best in the first half although not easy to sweep and play the way he likes too on the pudding of a pitch. Moved into midfield and competed well although did not enjoy his normal amount of time and never really got to the pace of the game. Kept at it and talked well whilst got on the ball more in the last 20 mins.
Alex: 8 (Mom) - getting better every week and did very well down the right in the first half when it was difficult to stand up let alone dribble with the ball. Put a couple of great crosses in and unlucky not to score when a far post effort hit the bar. Second half got forward very well and set up a few chances with his familiar runs down the wing.
Woody: 7.5 - not quite as sharp as normal although worked hard but got frustrated first half (like me !!) at the lack of quality and commitment shown. Second half battled well down the left in a quagmire.
Waggy: 7 - two quiet weeks and never got to grips with midfield. Undoubtedly a quality ball player but struggled with the physical battle and the lack of time whilst the midfield never got the ball to feet as much as normal due to the conditions.
Herbie: 8 - first half was outfought by their midfield but second half was more like his old self. Marauding, winning tackles and dominated the physical battle and was all over the park. Got forward well and linked well down the right with Al on a couple of occasions. To cap his game he exquisitely finished from 20 yards when following up to chip over a defender into the net for his first of the season (more to follow!).
Sim: 7 - not his sparkling best today and found little opportunity to use his pace. Needs to find a way to influence games when the ball is not at his feet - some of which will come with games and more experience.
Kiffy: 7.5 - starved of the ball and missed a couple of chances he would normally bury but led the line in trying circumstances. Put in a good display between the sticks with good handling and proved a calming influence between the sticks (he won't like that!!). Still had time to go up top and bury his penalty - out bluffed the keeper.
Easton: 8 - very quiet first 35 minutes and had hardly had a kick or found a blue shirt. However kept going and took his two chances very well to score before half-time and completed his trick after half time. He has added goals to his game well but I think he will agree it was not his best performance - more to come I believe!
Subs:
Elksy: 8 - quality when he came on. Scored one and set up a couple for Gurney with intelligent runs and simple passes. Not happy at being sub but showed the right attitude to turn it into a positive by showing aggression and work rate on the pitch. Kept it simple and was part of a good show for the last 30 minutes.
Gurney: 8 - scored two, made a couple and made the keeper make a some decent stops. Quality finisher with deceptive pace and his quality showed when he came on for the second week running.
Ash: 7 - working his way back to fitness and his ankle appears to be getting better. Did okay up front and his physical presence takes defenders away and was unlucky not to score with a header from a good Al cross.
Job Done - not spectacular but second half was clinical and much better than the first half.
We did not adapt too well first half and the 3-4-3 did not work so when we changed it to 3-5-2 we improved and started to compete better. In the first half we were a bit lethargic, over confident? and never got near their no 8 who ran the show.
Second half we pushed up, kept it simple and dominated with some good football and especially in the last 30 minutes some clinical finishing. Scoreline was harsh on BMG who are not the worst team we have faced.
We have a tough couple of games in the next two weeks and these will be a real test as to how good we are against decent sides - Beaumont Athletic and West End.
I have the envious task of sorting a team for next week and I have an interesting dilemma and the first point I am going to make now is I will do what is best for the team not individuals. Some of have shown good attitudes whilst one or two have left me a tad disappointed we are in this together. If you are away , injured or absent from training then it all goes in the pot. Scouse's injury is a real blow because although Pad and Kiff are good in goal neither want to do it and prefer to play on the pitch - I cannot help it fella's but remember we are a team!!
Similarly, a few of the regulars from last season have dropped their standards and I do not believe are playing as well or working as hard as they can - I know it and I believe they do too!
No room for sentiment I will be picking the team based upon how we have performed over recent games and it will be interesting to see who makes training this week - remember Wed 9pm at Winstanley.
You may think I am a miserable so and so for not praising the recent wins but I know the real tests are to come and we have a squad of 17/18 quality players and I think a few need to recognise that. I have a feeling a few may be disappointed on Sunday next.
02.11.08 vs Thrussington (A) - BW Cup Won 7-0
FT: 7-0 (Gurney 3, Wag, Sim, Woody and Kiff (pen))
HT: 3-0
One enforced change from last week with Scouse wimping out I had to put Kiff in the sticks (much to his pleasure) with Wag returning up front. Elksy and Gurney joining Dave on the bench. Pez, Ben and Simon were away with Matty still out with an injury.
Started 3-4-3 with Easton, Wag and Sim up front with Haggerty lucky to retain his place after his sending off last week alongside Herbs in the middle of the park.
Ratings:
Kiff: 8 - decent first half in goal although he was not stretched too much despite a far from convincing show by a couple of the lads at the back. Good chat and swept well when required. Moved up front in the second half and could easily have had a trick but got on the scoresheet with a well taken penalty.
Kingy: 7 - not at his sharpest and caught in possession more than previous weeks. Not helped by a lack of organisation behind him but got better in the second half. In recent games has got tight and not dived in but caught more today than recent games - we are all allowed an off day.
Pad: 6.5 - disappointing first half and never quite got into his stride. Do not know whether it was the late arrival
but started slow and never got any quicker. Like one or two others will benefit by turning up at training (more on that later!). Got the half mark for doing a decent job in the second half in between the sticks apart from breaking the goal and nearly knocking himself out - hopefully nothing too serious.
Harry: 9 (MOM) - best defender on the pitch. Very committed, attacked the ball, won all of his 50:50's and also distributed the ball simply and accurately. Good example of defending, keep it simple and ensure no one gets by. Well played Harry - good show mate.
Alex: 8 - looking more confident with every game. Not his fault but we do not use the wings as well when we play at Rushey Fields but still defended well and got forward well. Quietly effective and I sense he is coming back to form just in time for the big games coming up.
Woody: 8 - similar to Alex a bit starved of quality ball but worked hard with his usual quality distribution from the left. Scored a goal from a corner (Kingy - Woody's please if only to keep Hag's on his toes!). Did well to survive the Pad slam dunk which could easily have killed him let alone a cut head!!
Hag: 8.5 - ran Harry close for MOM. Took a while to get going but once he found the pace of the game he got on the ball and distributed it very well. Moved back to Sweeper in the second half and again played well. Just needs to keep his discipline but playing more like the Hag we need - even managed to be on time. Good show Big Man!
Herbs: 8 - bit like Hag early on struggled to get going but once he got into the game you could see the men he was playing against back off as he won more and more of the physical battle. Had his good looks spoiled for the photo (Pub Brawling again Herbs!) but unlucky not to score with a great turn and strike on the edge of the box which brough the best save of the game by their keeper.
Easton: 7 - never really got going like in previous weeks. Similar to the wide midfielders as we did not knock wide to feet much in the first half and was starved a bit although set up one of the goals with a long range shot tapped in by Sim. Needs to impose himself when the game is passing him by going and getting involved.
Sim: 7 - scored a goal but a very quiet game by Sim's standards but the passing to the wide boys was not as good as normal so never had the chance to really stretch the defence. His touch was better than last week and was unlucky to have another goal chalked out for offside.
Wag: 7.5 - got us rolling with a good strike into the bottom corner. Looked a little rusty having been away for a week but when on the ball caused problems and set set up a couple of goals with excellent through balls. Important that he demands the ball and pushes up because at times found himself a bit deep.
Subs:
Gurney: 8 - hat-trick and caused all sorts of problems when he came on at half -time. Quality finisher, deceivingly strong and quick over short distances he will be a great addition to the squad in the coming weeks if he can stay fit. Made a strong case for a starting place and deserved his trick which could easily have been 4 or 5.
Elksy: 7.5 - disappointed to be sub but did not moan and showed he wants his place back by the effort he made when he came on. Worked up and down (tried a bit too hard) but is at his most effective when keeping it simple and getting on the ball. Unlucky not to have scored and another who wants a starting place.
Dave: 6.5 - getting fitter with every game and with a bit of training will have him pressing for a starting place in the next few weeks. Could easily have had a trick but got stuck in and with a bit of match sharpness will get his touch back. Noticeable from the side though that he plays the easy pass, may be experience but a quality none the less.
In summary we did the job without hitting full throttle.
My expectations may be unreasonable but from the side we won at canter with a good clean sheet but 3-4-3 needs to be played at pace with the width being the key to creating opportunities. Did not happen today although some of the football when we got the ball down was good with a couple of moves in each half cutting them to shreds. A bit of praise as we made them look very ordinary at times and they are not the worst team we will face. Today had a good range of comedy moments with Waggy standing on the ball to end up in a big heap, Haggerty's cutting line to the wee striker about his voice breaking and as for Pad with the collapsing goal well I am just glad Tommy has a big mop on his bonce!!
Seriously now - A message for all - we have 16 or 17 quality players and we have some big games coming up with success in all cups so far meaning we have the opportunity to have a great season. Places are at a premium and if you have a starting spot it is important that you do not take it for granted as we have players champing at the bit to be in the team. We had 3 quality subs today, two watching injured and at least 2 more returning!!
I was disappointed at the turn out at training last week (well done to those who turned up). We have had a hard core of 10 who have turned up every week but it is the rest of you and you know who you are. I appreciate some have personal commitments but to not turn up at all over 2 months is not acceptable - I manage to be there and travel 250 miles a day (with 2 kids, a mortgage, wife, etc....... - no excuses!!!!!!!!!!!) and when it comes down to choosing the team it does count and will do so over the coming weeks - team spirit is great boys, an hour on a Wednesday evening is not a hardship!!
Big selection headache for next week as Pad is away so a number of dilemma's which will hopefully be made harder by Ben and Pez returning coupled with a full turnout at training.
See you Wednesday !!
26.10.08 vs Polska Ressies (H) - Cup Won 2-1
FT: 2-1 (Kiff and Sim)
HT: 1-0
A few enforced changes from last week with Elksy, Wag, Ben and Pez all unavailable although Alex, Pad and Herbs returned.
Started with a 3-5-2 with Easton, Herbs and Haggerty in Midfield. Pad returned at Sweeper with Harry and Haggerty at Centre Half.
Team Ratings:
Scouse: 8 - had a decent game considering he had been knocked out by Haggerty before kick off. Maybe I will ask Haggerty to do this before every game! Sadly stretchered off with what sounded a nasty injury (sounded because Scouse made as much noise as the squeeling pigme in the Polska midfield!) Glad to report not as serious as feared with ligament and tendon damage (Swelling is really bad so needs a 2nd xray next week) - likely to be our for a few weeks!
Alex: 8 - marked a quick winger out of the game and still had time to get forward very well. Linked up well with the strikers and put a number of good crosses in and got better as the game went on. Carrying a bit of a knock but kept going to put in a good stint.
Woody: 8 - little pocket dynamo on the left hand side had another excellent game which is only lacking goals to add the complete performances. Never got beat by his opponent all morning and linked the game well down the left whilst put in some excellent crosses from corners.
Harry: 8.5 - looking like he has been part of the defence for ages. Excellent committed performance despite being a bit Haggerty'd before kick off. Won his duel and never gave the striker a kick. Also anticipates the loose ball extremely well when it dropped between midfield and won a lot of 50:50 challenges. Well played Harry.
Kingy: 9 (MOM) - very committed, but also disciplined with him looking extremely comfortable at the back with every game. Has cut out the dribbles when in dangerous areas and is now marking well whilst stepping forward into midfield to launch attacks too. Went on a couple of well selected runs and marauded his way through which could easily have brought him a goal but for a last ditch challenge. Good to hear his voice at the back too - well played Kingy.
Pad: 8.5 - good to have him back and still looked reasonably fit (not too much beer last week!) and will benefit from the full 90 mins. Will be worried like Kiff about who is going to get the dreaded green shirt next week but has played as well as anyone at Sweep this season. Kept it simple, cleared his lines but more importantly won his tackles and did the chat we need.
Haggerty: 7.5 - unlucky or stupid - you decide? I have my view but I think he will know himself that he should know better. Disappointing end to his game to get sent off as he had played very well up to that point winning his challenges, got around the pitch and had dictated the game from the middle of the park where he liked to play. Big dilemma will be if he keeps his place despite the sending off??
Herbs: 8 - good to have the Skipp back and hopefully he can get a run of games under his belt. The pitch suited his love for getting stuck in and put in a lot of challenges all over the pitch. Another that will have benefited from the full 90 which will help sharpen him up for the games ahead. Had a couple of good efforts on goal and was unlucky not have scored.
Easton: 7.5 - worked hard and looked more comfortable when part of the 3-4-3. Had a few chances but will know he could have finished better as his finishing was not up to his usual standards. Needs to ensure that he gets involved even when the ball is not running - could not fault his effort and commitement but will have better games.
Kiff: 8 - very quiet in the first 20 minutes but for the next 50 minutes played better. Needed to up his work rate and did so for the latter part of the first half and when the ball is in around the box comes alive. Could easily have had 3 or 4 goals with a bit of luck but looked dangerous and created his own chances with a couple of dribbles in the box. Took his goal well to get us rolling - like Pad will be concerned by the injury to Scouse.
Sim: 7.5 - a bit in and out today. Did some excellent things with one or two good runs creating opportunities for others whilst on a couple of occasions got his legs tangled and gave the ball away sloppily. Needs to have a bit of confidence and at times be ruthless with his finishing plus start standing up for himself so as not get shoved off the ball. Never stopped running, working and stretched their defence and took his goal well with a nice finish.
Subs:
Dave: 7 for Sim. Came on and looked more like his old self in Midfield winning the ball in the air. Talking, kept it simple and still nearly scored with a header from a corner. I think he is ready to push for a starting place and I may force it on him!!
Simon: for Scouse. Came on in difficult circumstances near the end for his debut and slotted into midfield. Will benefit from training and getting to know the lads better.
Good performance with a very committed hard working performance. Some of the football 20 minutes either side of half time was excellent - passed and moved at pace they could not live with us. Not sure how many times we hit the wood work as I lost count but also there best player by a mile was their keeper who kept it respectable.
May be a little harsh but if our finishing had been better we would have justifiably won by 5 or 6 againsta decent Division 2 side. We are progressing nicely in all competitions and with half a dozen players unavailable today it shows the quality in the squad.
All but the last 10-15 were very good with the sending off disrupting us slightly and Scouse getting stretchered off definitely made things even more chaotic - apologies but I never saw the last 10 minutes as I was a bit worried about the Scally - not as worried as you lot should be if he is out injured - watch your hub caps, bags etc (I will try and get someone on the door of the chango's). Seriously, hopefully not as bad as it looked with ligament and tendon damage only although he needs another xray as the swelling is very bad (I promised I would not mention the scream so least said the better!!).
I think the last 4 or 5 games have shown that we have 16 or 17 good quality players and if you are missing it is hard to get your place back and as the big games come along it is important that you all perform every week because there will be subs champing at the bit. The team spirit and support for each other is growing with every week and this will be tested further with someone having to possibly cover for Scouse whilst he recovers.
Good performance and another cup game to look forward to - we whould fear no one at all in Div 2, 3 or the County Cup but we need to maintain the work rate whilst playing with a tempo as we demonstrated today. Well done Boyz!
19.10.08 vs Little Bowden (H) Won 8-0
FT: 8-0 (Kiff 4, Easton 2, Sim and Haggerty-Wood)
HT: 5-0
A few changes from last week with Herbs and Pad on their jollies and Alex still not recovered from the poker night on Friday - Haggerty will do anything to get a place in the team even leading young boys astray
- and not for the first time! Still failed Hags!!
Pez started at sweeper with Harry and Kingy at centre half. Sim at right midfield with Ben and Elksy in the middle of the park with a front three of the mitchell brothers and Easton. A young and sprightly bench of Ash, Haggerty and me - interesting
Team and Ratings:
Scouse: 7 - quiet game with few saves to make although made one or two half decent stops. May be a bit harsh but not one of his better games for distribution and needlessly gave away possession on several occasions. May be it was boredom!!
Pez: 7 - making his first start at Sweeper in Pad's absence. Used his experience to ensure we kept a clean sheet but a new back three was not as composed as I would have liked and at times a bit too rushed. Gave 100% and although he tired his experience was valuable although did not get the ball down like he has in other appearances.
Kingy: 8 - good game with a better second half show. Never thought I would say it but looked extremely comfortable at centre half and led by example at the back with an effective performance.
Harry: 7 - steady and committed. Gives the back three a bit of pace and good to have him back after his absence last week
. Rewarded with a starting spot after being at training and did reasonably well. Will get better with games and will be given the opportunity to cement place for the bigger tests that lay ahead.
Sim: 7 - started at right midfield but moved up front after 15-20 minutes. Not one of his better games and although he got on the scoresheet I sense he is trying a bit too hard. At times got into good positions but either rushed or chose the wrong option however, never stopped trying and showed a good work ethic for the team. Tapped up by N&L after the game but that hopefully will not effect his Sunday performances!!
Elksy: 7 - had the better of his opponent but did not impose himself like last week. Won his tackles and worked hard although his passing was not as accurate as normal.
Ben: 7 - similar to Elksy in that he had the better of his opponent but never quite got on the ball and created the chances he normally does. Good to get a start under his belt and I am sure will have more influence in the coming weeks.
Woody: 8 - had a good game down the left and set up a number of the goals with great crosses or set pieces. As normal worked hard and I have yet to see anyone better down the left than our Tommy!!
Kiff: 8 - scored 4 and could have had another couple with a bit of luck. He may lack a bit of mobility but undoubtedly an excellent finisher and gets all the simple tap ins by being in the right spot. Will benefit from the 90 minutes and his game will sharpen up with a few more games under his belt - put the hard work in Kiff and you will take some shifting!
Wag: 7 - again moved around to help the team and played right midfield. Worked hard although a bit starved of quality ball out on the right. Undoubtedly one of our first choice strikers when at full strength and will be bending my ear when he returns to get back up front. Decent today but not spectacular.
Easton: 9 (MOM) - his best performance of the season and worked very hard up front and deserved his two goals. Used his pace and linked up well down the left with Woody and chose the right options be it a pass, shot or cross on most occasions. One of the few players who hit his straps this week and shows a determination to keep his place. Keep it up Easto - well done mate.
Subs:
Haggerty: 6.5 (for Elksy) - back after a week away and did reasonably well when he came on. Desperately wanted a goal and leaving Woody in his wake with a good finish from 8 yards. Still to convince me though that he is not a centre half
Ash: 6 (for Wag) - still not 100% but putting it in for the team and again will benefit from another 25 minutes. Did okay up front but as our passing was not of normal standard was starved a bit of the ball to feet.
Me: (for Pez) - like the old days back at Sweeper - big difference is that me old legs have definitely gone and will only be doing it again in a emergency. Managed to give the ball away with my first touch, hit their right back with a free kick with my second and head their striker with my third or fourth. Past it
- so much for no late nights and not drinking ( I am considering the Haggerty diet but it may be a bit late in my life for that).
Good result, good commitment but an average performance if I am honest.
We started well and were 3 up within 15 minutes and had started with crisp, quick passing and used the full width of the pitch. However the last 60-75 minutes was pretty poor in terms of passing and using the full pitch.
A number of players did not play anything like as well as they can although I thought the work rate and commitment was very good again.
Maybe it was a bit too easy and we all wanted the ball rather than playing the shape and doing our jobs but we will have a lot tougher examinations and that starts next week against Polska Ressies in the cup.
Having believed that the formation was working quite well I thought today it did not function quite as well and at times we did not have the quality in midfield or an experienced head to put his foot on the ball and play it simple.Food for thought for next week with Herbs, Al, Pad all returning whilst Dave and Haggs have pressed for a starting place! Training will be interesting to see who wants a start by turning up on Wednesday - it makes a difference Boyz - ask Harry!!
Enough of the negativity for now! 25 goals in three games, one conceded, chances galore and we can only beat what is put in front of us whilst I have to say the team spirit is excellent so we move on - I have played against Polska lots of times and hate them with a passion so lets put their ressies to the sword next week!
12.10.08 vs Swan & Hove (H) Won 9-0
FT: 9-0 (Wag 3, Easton 2, Sim 2, Kingy and Alex)
HT: 3-0
Team news as part of the report below - makes diappointing reading (Not a happy Gaffer!!)
Scouse: 8 - did everything asked of him which was not much as he was hardly busy. However, concentrated well and swept on a couple of occasions well. Distribution was a bit better with no silly throw outs and his clearances were generally good. Not expected to start and despite this had shown a good attitude.
Alex: 8 - played well at right midfield especially first half as he got forward well and linked up well with Sim and Easton. Made a number of good runs and put several good crosses into the box. Beginning to regain his confidence and needs to use his pace and attack more which will create even more chances. Took his goal very well with a nice side foot finish into the corner.
Woody: 8 - very tidy and looks comfortable at left midfield. Got forward well especially second half with plenty of space to get on the ball. Had a great chance in the first half which he will feel he should have buried (The big man would have buried it Tommy - Sorry
). Just needs to add a few goals to his game.
Pad: 8 - organised, kept it simple and was never really under any pressure. Helped by the fact they only played one up top but he and Kingy were comfortable all game. Beginning to find the form of last season and will be gutted to be unavailable next week.
Kingy: 8 - hates it at centre half but plays for the team. Had a good game with him dominating a big centre forward who only got away once in the whole game. May not like it but always committed and at times when he had space launched attacks very well. Got forward to score a very good header from a corner - well played Kingy good to see you fit again.
Kiffy: 7 - disappointed to not be up front having helped the team out last week versus Blackbird in goal. Instead spent half a game at centre half and did okay. Second half he moved back up front for 25 mins with Wag moving to centre half but looked a bit off the pace and never got going. May feel hard done by as he has helped the team over the past fortnight but I do believe he is not at his best so far this season - prove me wrong Kiffer!!
Herbs: 8 - got in amongst it well with usual energy and dominated with Elksy in the physical battles. He got forward extremely well and could easily have had a hat-trick with a bit of composure (nose bleed near the goal) and a wider goal. Kept going for the full 90 minutes and looking sharper with every game - he and Elksy compliment each other well and another who will be disappointed to be away next week.
Elksy: 9 (MOM) - first half he dominated the physical battle with Herbs but was a bit wasteful either choosing to knock a long pass rather than short or rushing his final ball. However, in the second half he shortened his passing and hardly wasted a pass whilst when he moved to Sweeper he got on the ball and started a lot of the attacks with simple intelligent play. Well played Steph.
Waggy: 8.5 - led the line well in the first half and linked the play well. Showed good character by moving to centre half to enable Kiff to move up front. Saved his best play until the last 20-25 minutes when he moved back up top to claim a deserved hat-trick with good movement, simple passing but also set up 2 or 3 other goals. Making a place his own up top whilst always willing to be flexible for the team - quality Wag well played.
Easton: 8.5 - movement, pace, dribbling and goals. Was probably our best player in the first half with a good work rate and caused problems all game with his tenacity and pace. His best game of the season and clearly suited to 3-4-3 enabling him to get forward more although not forgetting his defensive responsibilities. Tired towards the end but a good performance.
Sim: 8 - bubbling along with an explosion waiting to happen. The ball is not running for him at the moment but never stops trying and kept going with great work rate all game. Probably trying a bit too hard to make sure but his two goals will hopefully be the start of a goal run. Could easily have scored 5 or 6 and hopefully someone is going to suffer over the next few weeks. His general play is improving with him setting up or involved in a few of the goals especially Al's with a lovely pass to play him in.
Subs:
Ben for Pad (60): 7 - as ever when available Ben is quality and came on in Midfield and got on the ball whilst he never shirks the work. Created a number of chances and was involved in 3 of the last 5 goals we scored in the last 25 minutes.
Dave for Kiff (70): - good to see him back and although not yet fully fit will be good to have back in the squad. Even in this brief performance showed his quality with good hold up play but also with his good ability to play the simple ball and rarely gives the ball away. Unlucky not to have scored and will be putting pressure on the players in the team over the next 2-3 weeks for a start.
Pez for Easton (70): slotted in well at centre back and showed that experience counts with a good brief performance. As last week looked comfortable and also adds a good level of chat when on the pitch and another with experience who keeps it simple. Pressing for a start next week.
With Haggerty unavailable it was good to welcome back Ben and Dave into the squad with Kingy returning to the starting eleven. Disappointingly let down by Harry who was outstanding last week - I will await a call Harry!!
I do not get on my soapbox very often but am slightly irked - we are a team and keeping all of you (16 or 17) happy is not the easiest as we have a good quality squad. Pleasingly we do not have any mega stars but all good decent honest players. I pick the team on how you perform not personalities whether it be Pad, Kingy or Sim you all get treated exactly the same and I feel I deserve a little respect for that - if you have a problem tell me not anyone else. We are all big boys and if you have an axe to grind tell me!! The season is a long one and no one likes being sub or subbed but we are a squad and everyone has a part to play (good to see Matt and Clive despite injuries down supporting the Boyz) with players uavailable and injuries it is down to showing me you deserve a place - that is a message to all!!
Today's game was a very good peformance with the first 20 minutes and the last 20 minutes as good as we have played this season. I sense that we are beginning to knit together and we look dangerous every time we attack - granted the standard of the opposition was not great but you can only beat what is put in front of you. It is noticeable that Easton and Elksy are beginning to integrate well into the side and the slightly more adventurous formation appears to suit our passing game.
Now a cautionary note as we will be faced with a lot stiffer test and it is important that we do not get carried away but so far we have improved every game and I expect us to maintain that next week at home versus Bowden.
05.10.08 vs FC Blackbird (A) Won 8-1
FT: 8-1 (Easton 2, Wag 2, Elksy, Kingy, Haggerty (Beauty!!) and an OG (Not Woody's!!)
HT: 2-1
Couple of changes from the previous week with late withdrawals leaving us a bit short as Andy and Fab were not available. Kingy was not 100% and we have a parade of injured or unavailable players with Dave (inj), Ed (Sicknote), Matt (Walking Disaster), Clive (Major surgery required), Gurney (Domestic responsibilities), Ben (Unavailable), Scouse (Suspended). With Kingy on the bench we went for a change in tactics with a 3-4-3 with Harry making his debut and Pez fit to return to the bench.
Team and Ratings:
Kiff: 9 - look back through the reports and whenever he asked to help out we normally win and win well. Has a calming presence with excellent handling and very good reflexes. Beaten early on although the forward was 8 yards offside (Pez) but after that did not look threatened. Commanded his area, cleared his lines and his distribution was excellent - made one or two good saves and peaked with a tremendouse penalty save.
Pad: 8 - getting better with games and defended extremely well whilst the organisation at the back is improving with every game (pity you are away for a week). Kept it simple cleared his lines and took responsibility to Sweep and had a good game.
Harry: 9 - tremendous debut. Marked there top striker out of the game with a physical, committed performance. Won more than his fair share of 50:50's and added some much needed pace whilst also won his aerial battle. Suprised me how committed he is and extremely competitive - a good start and a great example as has had to wait for a chance and took it. Well done Harry!
Haggerty: 8 - not as dominant as the last two or three weeks but still had a good game with a strong performance winning his personal duel but lacking a bit of energy. Still had the time to get forward and going back towards his own goal hit a 20 yard bullet into the bottom right hand corner. Made it look easy but it was a bullet with great skill and a deserved goal as has come close in the last 2 or 3 weeks.
Alex: 8 - played right midfield with plenty of room to get forward and use his pace. The formation suited him and used his acceleration and fitness to get up and down the line with a couple of superb runs creating chances. Moved further forward in the last 20 minutes and could easily have had a hat-trick and looked very good going forward. Unlucky to have a good goal chalked off when clearly over the line - more like his old self maruading down the wing.
Woody: 8 - similar to Alex in that made the system work by playing left midfield and had plenty of the ball with some good runs linking the play well with Easton down the left. Set up the decisive 3rd goal just after half-time which was sliced in by the defender. Had more of the ball than recent weeks and another that benefited from getting the ball down and passing it.
Herb: 8 - part of a two man central midfield and worked very hard with him winning the vast majority of his 50:50 challenges. Got up and down very well and played with discipline as he and Elksy completely dominated their opponents. Had a mad 5 minutes in the first half when he put one or two great through balls for them but otherwise did a lot of unsung work and provided the platform for the team to play.
Elksy: 8 - had a very good second half with an accomplished performance in playing it simple. As with Herbs dominated his opponent and staked a claim for a midfield spot with a hard working performance. Can undoubtedly play and second half showed his quality with a lot of tackles won but most impressive was his simple passing to turn defence into attack with short give and go's out wide which sprung the team forward. Also got off the mark with a goal. Good second half Elksy - well done mate.
Easton: 8.5 - looked more comfortable as part of a three man attack and his movement, pace and work rate were very good in the first half. Scored one and set up one in the first half and linked up well with Wag and Sim adding a deserved second. Just needs to make sure with his passing because at times gets into great positions to be let down by his final ball. However, a good show and definitely benefited from the freedom to attack in a more positive formation.
Sim: 8.5 - terrorised their defence all games but not just with his pace but with his movement and playing others into position. Stretched their defence by pulling them all over and not being too static. Another that benefited from the positive formation by having more freedom to attack but still played with discipline to track back and ensure we did not got over run out wide. Just needs a bit of composure to not snatch at chances and was unlucky not to score.
Wag: 10 (Mom) - I put my hands up as this was the real Wag and may be he has suffered from not playing in his best position. This was a superb performance of leading the line, playing others in but also great movement and never was static which stopped him being marked too easily. Deceptively strong and got on the ball second half to set-up and score two goals (the 2nd a cracking volley which he made look easy) - an excellent performance well played Maggy!
Subs:
Pez for Herbs: 7 - came on at right midfield and despite being out injured for a few weeks he slotted straight in and showed that experience can count with a good display down the right. Another who keeps it simple and if he can stay fit will be important addition to the squad over the remainder of the season.
Kingy for Easton: 7 - came on scored, hit the post and slotted into midfield very well. Made his presence felt with a few good headers and adds a bit of physical power to the midfield. Needs to get 100% fit now to impose himself on the midfield.
The sign of a good side is how you respond to a set back and second half we answered my doubts with the best display this season so far.
A change in formation to 3-4-3 brought a few risks as it was important that the wide midfielders and the two wide attackers work hard so as not to get overrun. First half we played some good stuff but whether it was confidence or just sloppiness a few of the final balls were sloppy and undid a lot of good work. It is important we do not lose sight of the fact we must start strongly and play our football - we have 15 or 16 very good footballers and we need to get the ball down, pass and move - when we do that we are a very good side.
We went 1 down thanks to an assist by Pez as a goal was conceded to a free header when only 8 yards offside. It was probably the kick we needed as were going through the motions rather than committing ourselves 100% to the task. A good goal by Wag walking round the keeper pulled us deservedly level, however, we then became a bit sloppy and although they did not threaten we wasted posession. Right on half time Easton drove in from a Wag cross to put us 2-1up.
Half Time and the chat was all about being positive but more importantly about playing our passing game - getting the ball down but committing to the passes and not giving it away.
Second half we were right at it and within 5 minutes game was wrapped up with two quick goals. The remainder of the half was more like the Goldboyz I expect with all players showing last weeks commitment but with a quality of passing and movement we had shown in flashes so far but today we strung it together for longer spells. We scored another 4 goals and could easily have had another 10 whilst in amongst it they got a joke of a penalty (their ref felt sorry for them) which was superbly saved by Kiff diving full length to his right - quality!
As much as we should not get down by the defeat against Kirby we should not get carried away by defeating Blackbird. However, today proved that when we play at a high tempo, hunting in packs, physically competing and adding our passing game we are a match for anyone. We made a decent side look very ordinary and destroyed them to the point they gave up which is clearly a sign we can over power teams.
All 13 played a part whilst Scouse did his bit by reffing too - the formation only works if we put the work in but what today showed was that getting Alex, Woody, Elksy, Sim, Easton all moving forward is that we have the pace to stretch any team. The back line again did very well with a very impressive debut from Harry (proper centre half play with physical commitment, pace and a desire to win).
Big dilemmas now - do I change the formation, do I keep Kiffy in goal, what about Kingy, Pez, Ben, Dave etc?? - A big dilemma but one I want as I was really impressed with the team spirit and commitment today. Standard set now lets maintain it.
PS - good to see an old centre half friend of mine (Keith) down watching - he came to have a look and hopefully saw enough to come training and have another look. Would be a good addition to the squad and the gauntlet has been thrown down by the 11 who played today.
28.09.08 vs Kirby Rangers (H) Lost 2-1
FT: 1-2 (Kiff)
HT: 0-1
No changes from the starting eleven the previous week although Andy was back on the bench with Elksy, Harry and Fab. Slight positional changes with Wag at RWB, Alex at Centre Half and Kingy in Midfield.
Team and Ratings:
Scouse: 8 - did well with plenty of chat and commanded his area well. Not really tested that much but when called upon made a couple of good saves and was alert all game. Had no chance with either goal.
Wag: 7 - not his favourite position but worked hard although not an easy task as did not receive a lot of quality possession with much time to play. Never gave up and got forward especially second half. Went up front and reminded me that this is his preferred position.
Woody: 7 - another who worked hard and did well having the better of his opponent. Never had many opportunities to get into the last third as general distribution to the wide boys was a bit lacking.
Pad: 7 - grit, determination and commitment in abundance but lacking match sharpness and showed in the first half when hiding a little. Second half was better with the team higher up the pitch and gave the team a better platform. Needs to get fit to allow him to relax and play the role he is capable of.
Haggerty: 8 - one of our better players who showed the commitment for the full 90 minutes. Defended well first half and had more time in the second to get more time on the ball. Unlucky not to score with a great strike from 30 yards (Ok - maybe 40 yards).
Alex: 8.5 (MOM) - a tough job in a position he does not enjoy. Man marked a very good centre forward who was strong and mobile. Hardly gave the striker a look and did very well to stand up to the task physically with good pace getting the defence out of one or two difficult situations. One for the team today - well done Al.
Herbie: 8 - another who ran his socks off and despite still lacking a bit of sharpness managed to compete well. Led by example second half with a disciplined performance sitting and protecting the defence.
Kingy: - disappointingly went over on his ankle and had to go off early in the first half. Pity as he had started well and looked up for the fight in midfield.
Easton; 7 - no lack of effort and commitment but struggled to influence the game in a competitive midfield battle in the first half. Yet to see the best of him but as he gets used to the way we play I am sure will we see him have a greater impact.
Kiff:: 7.5 - led the line well and worked hard without getting too many opportunities to score. Suffered with the lack of quality balls to feet in the first half whilst the lack of ball ot wide starved him of crosses that he thrives on. Still ran and closed down and never gave the defenders an easy ride.
Sim: 7 - quieter than normal and had few opportunities to run at defenders. Went on a couple of runs and got behind them wide but did not quite happen for him. As the standard gets better needs to think about his runs as defenders are smarter. Worked hard but will have better games.
Subs:
Elksy for Kingy: 7.5 - put in a good shift and won his physical battle with some quality covering and tackles. At times needs to keep simple and not try too much and his passing was not up to his usual standards. However, in the last 25-30 minutes he and Andy got on top in Midfield and with a bit of compsure could have made the difference.
Andy for Easton: 7.5 - came on at half time and added a bit more work rate to the midfield. Once we pushed up he and Elksy got on top with the assurance that Herb was sat in front of the back 3. Needs to add an attacking threat but with games will add some good competition to the midfield.
Harry and Fab not used.
We knew this was a big game as having dropped points early in the season this was a game to prove a point in.
I was pretty confident before the game as during the pre-match teamtalk it was clear that the starting eleven appeared up for the game. However, the first half was pretty even although the last 15-20 minutes we dropped too deep and gave away possession too much. Unfortunately we defended a corner poorly and a 20 yard strike from the edge of the box flew past an unsighted Scouse. It was coming and we went in 1 down at the break.
A few harsh words were vented at half time and the second half was an improvement with Kiff equalising early in the second half. Without ever dominating we looked the better side and with Elksy and Andy pushing on we got ourselves into a few threatening positions without selecting the right option or showing the quality to create an opening.
I could not criticise the effort or commitment as all 13 players used gave 100% commitment and physically a few were out on their feet at the end. Undoubtedly Kirby are a decent side but are they better than Throops or St Pats - I am not so sure.
I think we deserved a point and the goal was harsh as it was against the run of play and we caught on the break. I think it was said after the game that if we play like that every week we will be alright - I am going to disagree because we are not making things happen like we did last season and one or two are definitely playing without much confidence. We cannot afford not to peform for the full 90 minutes and the first half cost us today.
The standard is better and to win games we will have to compete for 90 minutes and make better use of the ball when we get it whilst also having a bit more quality in the opponents half. Training will help but I need everyone to make the effort to be there as it is fitness that we do need to work on - we are missing the likes of Dave, Ben, Matt, Ed and Clive but we cannot bemoan those not available.
Disappointed, frustrated, unlucky - all those words describe how we all feel. Beaten by a better team ? - I can live with that if that was the case but ...........I think we know the answer!!
We need to respond next week - there is a long way to go and I think a lot of teams will beat each other but we need to put our own house in order starting next week versus FC Blackbird.
21.09.08 vs Talbot (A) Won 3-0
FT: 3-0 (Easton, Sim, Kiff (Pen))
HT: 1-0
No changes from the starting eleven the previous week although Elksy, Matt and Harry returned to the bench with Gurney, Andy (Inj) and Ben unavailable.
Team and Ratings:
Scouse: 8 - Not a lot to do although when called upon in the first half made a couple of good saves. Second half was good again with better calling and chat for the lads in front of him - his kicking is still poo (may be a bit of training required).
Alex: 8 - Good game from Al. Did well down the right without too much service and again moved into centre half for the last 35 minutes and was part of good defensive display who earned a deserved clean sheet.
Woody: 8.5 - that's more like it Tommy! Good display especially second half when he got forward and back. Distribution was good and was always available as an outlet and put in a number of good crosses.
Haggerty: 9 (Mom) - Two weeks running and despite over-sleeping
(9.45am next week!!) had another good game. Commanding defensively and stepped into midfield with great effect at times. Went on a number of charging runs and battled very well winning most of his 50:50's and unlucky not to score!
Kingy: 8.5 - good display from Kingy and did very well when moving into midfield second half. Looked more comfortable at centre half than in previous games with headers won and tackles biting. Looked part of a good defensive unit which deserved a clean sheet.
Pad: 8 - Good honest, committed performance. Not yet 100% sharp but getting better with each game. Good to see him not overplaying and just using his experience and defensive experience to marshall the defence. Makes a big difference when just organising and talking rather than doing too much. Keep it simple Pad!
Herbie: 7 - Skip had a quiet and ordinary game by his own standards. I think he had been brain washed by all the 18 year olds at his house
. Bit off the pace and did not quite get to grips with their midfield. If selected next week needs to have a clear head as Kirby's midfield will be a step up!!
Wag: 7.5 - better second half but not as dominant as I would expect. Got more on the ball in the second half and especially when he moved to wing back where he got on the ball and moved inside to link the play well. No doubting his quality but probably would expect more of himself!
Easton: 8 - worked hard and got off the mark for us with a nice easy finish for the first goal. Supported the front two well and certainly tried to work back more than in previous games. Still at times need to give it easy and ensure that he competes - even against a big, ugly opponent.
Kiffy: 8 - worked hard and led the line well. Won the majority of his flick ons and deserved his goal - will be disappointed to have missed his second penalty. Needs to get in the danger area a bit more often and like a number of the lads will benefit from a bit of training.
Sim: 8 - caused problems all game. All round game has improved with more awareness of others around him - listening to Kiff and proved a big handful for a tough centre half. Deserved his goal and plenty more to come - keeps up his run with another today.
Subs:
Elksy for Herbie: 7 - did well when he came on. Linked the midfield nicely from front to back. At times need to play it simple and easy but pressed his claims for a place back next week.
Matt for Easton: 6.5 - good to see Matt back and did well when coming on. Won his tackles and fitted in at the back to man mark allowing Haggs a bit more freedom.
Fab for Sim: not fair to score Fab as he only had 10 minutes. I asked him to put himself about and use his undoubted ability but needs to be more physical. I was impressed and pleased as he worked very hard whilst nearly scored too!
Harry - not used. Showed great attitude and ran the line second half. May not have got on but showed the right attitude and will undoubtedly be keen to impess in training.
A game we dominated from start to finish and deservedly kept a clean sheet. First half we spluttered at times but always looked comfortable and whilst it was nil nil I was a little nervous that if we conceded we may struggle to impose ourselves. Talbot worked hard and showed that there will be no easy games in this division.
The first goal was important and a good cross from Al, nodded back by Kiff was well finished by East to give us a deserved lead. I asked for more effort and for us to close them down more in the second half and it was duly delivered with an improved second half display. Good to see us get the ball down and pass it at pace whilst ensuring that we pressed and stopped them playing. The defence were well marshalled and pushed up by Pad and second half was bit more like our form last season.
I was impressed the way Wag found time at RWB, Alex gave us a bit of pace at the back whilst Elksy came on and pressed for a starting place next week.
Haggs and Kingy led by example and it is no coincedence that we played better second half when we talked more, kept it simple, passed and move whilst used the full width of the pitch.
We are never going to be the quickest team but if play to our strengths and play our game we are a match for anyone. We need to press teams, compete physically and keep the ball which coupled with our attacking threat will deliver results!
Big test next week against Kirby and we will have to step up a level again but be good to get back to our own patch - interesting selection dilemma with Gurns, Andy and Ben to return whilst all three subs did well.
3 Points next week and I may buy the first round after the game!! MAY
14.09.08 vs Desford U (A) Won 4-1
FT: 4-1 (Kiff, Haggerty, Sim and Kingy (A Beauty!!!!!!!!!!!)
HT: 1-1
A couple of changes from the previous week with Kiff replacing Lee Gurney (Sick) and Pad replacing Elksy who was unavailable due to Dan Stewart's big wedding day (Congrats Dan!!).
Welcome returns on the bench for Ben and Andy whilst it was good to see Dave, Pez and Matt all in attendance supporting the team.
Team and Ratings:
Scouse: 7 - not overly tested but second half did well to stop alert and cleared a few through balls and generally was more vocal. Distribution at times was a bit wayward but we are used to that!
Alex: 7 - quiet game and never really saw a lot of the ball out wide. However, stuck to his job and was marking a dangerous winger who was probably Desford's best attacking player. Moved into centre half for the last 20 mins and did well again.
Woody: 7 - effective and combatitive whilst got forward well at time. Not dis-similar to Alex as I do not believe he is firing on all cylinders yet. However, very committed and his general play was good with signs that as we improved second half that he was looking more like his old self.
Haggerty: 9 (MOM) - much better and more like the Haggerty we all know. Put lots of meaty challenges in and got on the ball a lot whether at the back or pushing further forward. Also got his first of the season with a thunderbolt from 40 yards which the keeper could not handle (ok - 20 yarder that was fumbled!). Much better Hags now keep it up (p.s. that is from Mrs H!
Kingy: 7.5 - an average first half was followed by an excellent second half. Still getting to grips with Centre Half and at times in the first half dropped off too much, however second half got tight and won most of his battles. This enabled him second half to get on the ball and take the ball out from the back - made a big difference and imposed himself in the second half. A fantastic strike from 35 yards for a contender for GOS with the fourth - well played Kingy............second half
Pad: 7 - good game to comeback into. Swept okay and was good to have him organising especially second half when he got the centre half's organised and just concentrated on sweeping. Needs a couple of games and to play to his strengths which second half he did well. Better to come I expect
Wag: 6.5 - had started very well and in the first 15-20 mins had got on the ball and played a lot of good passes around the pitch. Was very disappointed to have to go off with a tight hammy which will hopefully not be too serious.
Easton: 6.5 - tried extremely hard and worked his socks off without quite effecting the game. Certainly no lack of effort but will be disappointed not to have made more impact although he already has integrated within the team well.
Herbs: 8 - much better than last week and got stuck in well all game. Even had an opportunity for a famous Herbie strike (went wide but not too far wide
) whilst also played his part in a couple of the goals. Part of a midfield which dominated second half and led by example by working his nuts off. Well played Herbs.
Kiffy: 8 - gained his place back after Gurns was icky but worked very hard and deserved his goal whilst with a bit of luck could have had a couple more. Led the line extremely well winning everything in the air but also set the tone up front by working hard to close defenders down. Good show Kiff.
Sim: 7.5 - stretched the defence with his pace and linked well with Kiff in a familiar partnership up front. Worked hard and scored a simple tap in to keep his run going without quite firing like he can.
Subs:
Ben for Wag (30): 7.5 - good to have him back and showed his quality on the ball and would have had a goal but for a fantastic save on half time. Linked the attack and the midfield very well second half and although not quite as sharp yet played an important role in keeping the team going forward. Tracked back and helped out at RWB.
Andy for Easton (50): 7.5 - back after a week away. Made a good contribution with a lot of energy in the second half. Got up and down very well and added a bit of bite to assist Herbie in a good midfield show in the second half. Unlucky not to have scored but played a key role in Sim's goal and did very well - put a good claim in for a starting spot.
Fab for Sim (80): Came on and had a couple of opportunities but needs a bit of time to fit into the team. Games and time will help to fit into the squad.
Having got off to a poor start to the season it was good to see the performance up a notch from last week.
First half we were on top for large parts without quite having that killer instinct which we will need against better sides, but we showed good character having conceded a poor goal from our own corner (concentration!!) to comeback and equalise before half time. Stepped it up second half and continued to dominate the possession but more importantly turned it into goals to get the season up and running.
I was especially pleased with the centre halfs and central midfield in the second half as we dominated and this allowed us to play our game. We probably need to use the wide boys a little more but that will come as we play more games.
Interestingly we started slow last season and started to roll after or third game last season!
We have a strong squad which was shown by Andy and Ben coming off the bench to influence the game whilst with Gurney and Elksy to return with Dave, Matt,Ed, Pez and Clive still to return we undoubtedly have enough quality to do very well. Clive should be back before Christmas, Matt and Ed are on their way back and Dave/Pez will hopefully be fit soon.
It is important that you all remember we are a squad and I was pleased in the first half to hear the lads on the side all encouraging. Competition for places is going to be fierce and I intend to try and organise training by Wed week so we can increase the fitness!
Good step in the right direction with plenty of room to improve - but a good 3 points!
07.09.08 vs FC Blackbird (A) 3-3
A couple of changes from the previous week with Lee Gurney replacing Kiff up front who was missing in action. Positional changes with Alex to RWB, Haggerty to Centre Half and Wag in Midfield.
Unfortunately with Kiff's absence a late change was required whilst injuries to Dave, Ed, Matt, Pez and Clive mean the squad is a little light with Andy away too!
Team and ratings:
Scouse: 6.5 - not one of his most dominant games although he had little chance with the first and third goals. Made a couple of good saves in the first half whilst second half was rarely troubled. Will feel he could have done better for the second despite the bobble and distribution could have been better.
Alex: 8 (MOM) - very good at RWB although not used as much as he should have been. In the second half moved to centre half and did extremely well giving the team much needed pace whilst still having the opportunity to get on the ball and make a few good forward runs.
Woody: 6.5 - not one of his better games although similar to Alex in that he was a bit starved of ball. Still got forward and back quite well although struggled physically with his winger who had a big height advantage. Withdrawn in the second half due to a slight knock which hopefully will not be too serious.
Kingy: 6.5 - a bit off the pace and struggled to impose his presence at centre half especially as part of a poor defensive unit in the first half. Second half was better and moved into Midfield and got more involved using his physical power more. Stuck to his job throughout and will get better with games.
Haggerty: 6 - not his normal self. Started at centre half and did not impose himself which is not like him. Moved into midfield second half and got on the ball a bit more but looked a bit lethargic and certainly did not perform up to his high standards. Maybe lacking fitness but usually does not lack commitment and endeavour but a bit lacking in this game.
Elksy: 6.5 - part of a poor defensive unit in the first half and did not organise and dominate as well as normal. Undoubtedly a good player who needs to impose himself on the team - not helped by the experienced players in the team underperforming. Second half when the centre half's were switched played better and got stuck in when moved into midfield.
Herbs: 7 - if only for effort and commitment. Not easy in midfield as the midfield battle was lost for the majority of the game with a lack of commitment. Not able to dominate as normal due to a lack of match sharpness which will come with games and bit less beer! As usual gave 100% and constantly was encouraging and worked extremely hard.
Easton: 6 - struggled with the physical nature of the midfield battle and did not find as much space as in the pre-season games. Not helped by the size of the pitch but did not manage to impose himself like he can. Never stopped trying and to be fair covered a lot of ground but mostly without the ball. Moved to LWB and did a good job for the team in the last 20 minutes.
Wag: 6.5 - suffers with being versatile but given the opportunity to start in midfield having played out of position last week at RWB. Bits of normal Wag quality in the first half but not as imposing as usual. Struggled to get to grips in midfield and did see as much of the ball as he would have liked. Unlucky in the first half as one run in the first half was wrongly adjudged offside when clean through.
Gurney: 7.5 - worked very hard and led the line excellently. Caused their defence a lot of problems in the first 30 mins and took his goal extremely well. Linked up very well with Sim and was constantly talking and encouraging him.Won his fair share of headers and if he stays fit will score goals this season. Good effort Gurns!
Sim: 7.5 - scored two goals and caused their defence plenty of problems. Looked sharp and lively with good work up front alongside Gurns. Found it more difficult when slightly starved of good service but never stopped running and tracking back. Pitch did not assist as limited space did not allow Sim to use his pace but still a threat and deserved his two goals. Unluckily had a winner ruled out which looked good from the side.
Subs:
Pad for Gurney - came on at Sweeper and although nowhere near as fit as he needs to be at least he added a bit of leadership at the back. Needs to get fit but experience, commitment and leadership could be vital based upon the performance of the team today.
Kiffy for Woody - disappointingly missed kick off and will I am sure be disappointed himself. However, did show when came on how important he is to the team as he led the line well and won his fair share of headers. Interesting dilemma for next week - maybe 3 up front and a change in formation?
Harry for Haggerty - did okay when coming on in a difficult situation. Needs to get a bit fitter to keep pace at the back but looks solid enough physically.
Fab - not used.
Well a new season is upon us and be unfair of me to comment on last week too much but from the show today a lot of the feedback whilst I have been away appears to be well founded.
Pre-season appeared to have gone well up to when I left but you would not have believed so based upon the show today. As most of the longer serving players will know I do not mind losing (not true - I hate it but I can put up with it!) if we get beat by better teams having given 100% effort and commitment.
It may seem a bit early in the season to have a rant but tough because here's my view!!
No excuses for not working your butt off and doing the job you have been asked to do - I looked around for large parts of the game today and there was a distinct lack of heart, effort and commitment - Not Good Enough!
Several of you were looking at others to inspire rather than doing your own job and standing up to be counted. A few of you may think you should be playing in other positions or would prefer to but we are a team and therefore at times or maybe all season I will pick the best team (no individual has special treatment!!)
The majority of the side have no excuses as you played last season and for those that are new I make no apology as you have all played pre-season. I expect a huge improvement in effort and attitude with only a few players excused from my criticism - may seem harsh but I believe we have an excellent squad when Dave, Matt and Ed return but we had 4 subs today (plus me) with 3 or 4 to return and I will not hesitate to consider changes
I believe the Division is wide open with a number of good sides but we have good enough players to do well but only if we work for each other and show the right level of commitment. May be last year was too easy and may be I am being too optimistic!!
As always feel free to say your piece if I am wrong as it is only my opinion!!
31.08.08 vs Beaumont Athletic (H) Lost 3-2
By Pad........deputising for the Gaffer
Team:
Scouse, (sent off - 2 Yellow 30) Woody, Alex, Elkes, Kingy, Waggy, Easton, Herbie (C), Hags, Kiff, Sim
Subs:
Pad (for Sim 60), Andy (for Easton 70), Fab (for Hags 80)
HT: 1-2
FT: 3-2
Scorers: Sim and Waggy
With Gaffer still away the task of securing early season points fell to me and the first decision was to leave myself on the bench - managing and playing is not easy!!
Went with the tried and tested formation, which meant a few players being asked to play in postions they may not want, but the team must come first. As a result we started well with everyone performing as asked, dominating a lot of the play early and not allowing Beaumont to get going. This lead to the first goal with a cracking ball from Elkes and good finish from Sim. We had more pressure but failed to make this tell, and allowed Beaumont into the game, this was due to some disappointing discipline and tracking from the midfield and maybe trying to play to high up the pitch.
As a result Scouse was called into action far more than we would like but performed exceptionally, including on a number of one-on-ones until getting caught and giving away a pen (no blame on scouse), picked himself up and although not the best pen he saved well. We were still poor for the reminder of half and including conceeding from a second pen (probably actually just outside the box) and losing Scouse for a second yellow - Kiff taking over between the sticks and making one notable first half save.
Second half we regrouped and firstly praise must go for the effort everyone put in (and their No.10 who missed a number of chances! ). We started as we finished with just Sim up front, but soon changed to a flat four at the back, with Waggy moving back to a more familiar midfield role, still chasing the game first sub was made with Me on for Sim, Wag moved up front to hold the ball up and Elkes into Midfield. A series of lucky breaks though and Beaumont went 2 up. Second change with Andy replacing Easton to give us some fresh legs and the change looked to have worked with 15 mins left as Wag got our 2nd. Final throw of the dice with Fab coming on for Hags and Elkes moving more Central but it wasn't to be a despite a spirited second half performance with 10 men - a losing start but good effort and if we compete for 90 mins like we did for the first 20 and second half we won't be far away.
Scouse 9: Great game whilst you were on and in no way to blame for what happened. Head up and lets see more performances like that (I'll ignore the one through your legs as you got back to it!)
Woody 7: Steady with some great cover and more chat than previously.
Waggy 7: Helped the team out by playing at the back first half and did nothing wrong, looked far happier and more involved though second half when further up the pitch and got the goal.
Elkes 7: Did what was asked for the most part, would still like to hear more chat and control of the backline when sweeping.
Kingy 7: Getting more used to playing CH will become more comfortable as time goes on, some good challenges.
Alex 7: Needs more chat from team mates when playing CH and gives us more at RWB but steady considering out of position
Easton 6.5: Part of a midfield that got dominated to easily in second part of first half needs to get back a bit more when we're defending
Herbie 6: Not your best game by your own high standards, but games will help and a better second half performance.
Hags 6: Similar to Herbs, being hungover didn't help! Got better 2nd half.
Kiff 8: Did all that was asked, sacrificed up front for the team
Sim 7: Took his goal well, too isolated when down to 10 and holding up the play not quite your forte yet!
Subs:
Pad: Needs minutes on the pitch!
Andy: Hard to come into a game like that but nothing wrong
Fab: Again hard with only 10mins but showed a couple of touches.
Boyz, it's not all doom and gloom the gaffer is back Friday so lets all pull together and get the season started properly then!
